tracking software recommendations?
« on: July 17, 2001, 04:04:56 PM »

Howdy! Im running a notebook with Win98 and was looking for recommendations for sat tracking software.  I was looking for some newer ones rather than being DOS-based.  I tried out WinOrbit but i didnt like it because it was plain jane and complicated to learn.  Im thinking about Nova or LogSatPro.  My computer should handle the 3D ok. which do you have/recommend?

SatSpy is pretty neat, with all kinds of views and 3D stuff. You can download an evaluation version at www.satspy.com

I am wondering why you would want to add a piece of software to your harddrive when you can get the pass information for your favorities birds by email.

See http://liftoff.msfc.nasa.gov/RealTime/JTrack/Amateur.html and click the J-Pass email button.

Let me know how more I can help.

Simple....To learn more about satellite operation. Just going on the Net to grab sat predictions or have them sent to you doesn't teach you anything or give you a feel for what the pass looks like from your QTH.  I've also seen some of those predictions be pretty far off. As to adding more software to your computer, what's the big deal about that?

Nova for Windows is the gold standard when it comes to Windows tracking software. If you watched the CNN coverage of the demise of MIR that was the software used. Free upgrades, automatic internet keps updates, DDE for the KCT and SASI rotor interfaces, etc....

I saw dons (kb9umt) note about satscape and decided to have a look at it.  this is a very nice tracker. the more i play with it the more features i like. the sat info panel is a real plus. its nice to have all the info in one place, and on the screen is the correct palce.  you were correct don....this is a nice program. the web page has extra maps you can download if for some reason you dont care for the default maps and the author says he is willing to help users with any maps they have that arent on the web page. there is also a note that a new version is about to be released soon. I joined his email notification section and will be looking forward to seeing the new version.  thanks don for the tip.

Nova for Windows 2.1 is really powerful.
If you have a gps receiver you can also download the feature NOVAGps. With it you can set up your system time and your location with extreme precision.

Well I LOVE STSorbit Plus, yes it is a DOS program but runs great full screen in Win 98 and there's nothing better IMHO. Also, I just got a Mac and MacDoppler Pro has got to be the best Mac based program as well. 73 and have fun! Tom

I use STS by David Ransom and it is used by Nasa as a standard tracking program.... if you want the best and it is shareware..... get it off the net and send him a few buck... you cannot go wrong.. 73's and good luck
