Help for Prospective Sat User
« on: January 20, 2002, 01:09:16 AM »

Moving to Hawaii with the Navy soon. Home ownership is not a good choice for now. Looking into other modes. I am looking into an FT-847 and am interested in patio style size antennas. I would like to start with the 27/14 FM birds with a mobile setup first. Will the little Arrow HT antenna take the higher power of a 50/100 watt rig?? Do they make a compact antenna for the larger rigs?? Intrest has also sparked new wonders. What will the RS HF birds give you that normal Skywave would not?? It seems that 15 and 10 already give good propagation to the world. Is it useful only during low cycle?? Will these compact arrow antennas work on the other SSB birds as well, or do I need more of a punch(AO-40/Oscar 10)?? Where can I get useful antenna project/kit info on the web?? Any clubs that I should know about? Any Elmer tips for me?    73, Thomas  W4MDL

You might check out www.amsat.org: http://www.amsat.org/amsat/news/wsr.html
Shows the weekly status of the satellites, some with links for more information.
Read the AMSAT-BB archives at the amsat site, a lot of information to digest.
Check out the whole AMSAT site could keep you busy for months.

The Arrow catalog states 20 watts max hand held for RF exposure limits.

You don't need more than 5 watts into an "arrow" style
yagi to have full quieting on the FM birds. The
FT-847 is a good rig for satellite work ... just
turn the power down if you are going to be close to the antenna (or working the FM birds). BTW, if you have not
listened in on the activity on those sats you may want to do so first ... it's a battle to get in at all, pretty
much just a fast moving repeater with no time for discussion!
