TenTec Pegasus still not running on this end
« on: October 09, 2008, 08:50:12 AM »

Thanks to all that have given there support and advice on my issue. Here's where I am at. When I hook the Pagasus up to my computer and turn it on the computer still comes up with the ****DEMO MODE**** error and says it is not communicating with computer. I am trying my older computer running XP as the TenTec program did not like the new laptop running Vista. The cable I bought to connect the computer to radio is a 9 pin serial cable ("USB Serial Converter" is on cable)with a USB connector to computer. I believe this is the correct cable as was suggested earlier. If this is not the correct cable let me know and I will try finding the correct one. I really want to get this little rig up and running to see just what the software radio stuff is all about. Also, is there anywhere where I can download a manual for this radio? I searched but did not come up with anything. Maybe that would be a better place to start??? The rig looked so simple that I even I could just hook it up and get it working but obviously I was mistaken. TNX AGN fer yer help on this. 73' de aa8wl, Sam

I assume that you are saying that all is fine with XP and not fine with Vista, since I've not read any earlier posts on your problem yet.

Apparently there are a lot of problems with USB converters working only occasionally or not at all with Vista, and it requires a converter that repeats rather than just reroutes the EIA signals, and proper RTS/CTS flow control must be supported in the converter.

In the Callsign Software Yahoo group yesterday, there was a posting indicating that the RT Systems model RTS-03 USB-serial converter is supposed to work just fine with Vista.  I think the item was bought from AES.

His post is a bit old but from my reading he seems to be having troubles in both XP and Vista.

Check in Device Manager to make sure you are selecting the proper COM port. Also make sure that the baud rate, bits, parity, and stop bits are set correctly.

Hi, I was able to get the Pegasus running once I got a serial cable that was the correct one. I had no idea that there are several different wiring for the serial cables. Thanks to Bob N8OB and several other hams I was able to re-wire a cable I had already to work with the Pegasus. I am using an older laptop running Windows XP currently. I would like to get my new laptop which uses Vista to work with the Pegasus now. I have an adapter from 9 pin serial to USB but it is not connecting. I will continue me search for the correct cable. Thanks for all the help guys, Great little radio and great that there are so many wonderful folks out there to help people like me. 73' de aa8wl, Sam

I have a Pegasus working with Windows XP. The serial cable is a straight thru variety... M-F. Straight thru means 1-1, 2-2, 3-3, etc. These are often sold as serial port 'extension' cables. It is good to find one that has a quality shield wrapping the signal wires.
