What Type of Receptacle for 220v Service in Shack
« on: March 13, 2006, 08:40:19 AM »

I have just about completed the new shack which I plan to wire with a dedicated 220 volt service from my house main for the potential addition of a linear amp. This same service will provide the 120v needed to power the rest of the gear in the shack. I would like some help in determining what type of 220 v receptacle is recommended. Do all amplifiers use a standard type 220v plug? I would like to go ahead and get this wired in so I can finish the insulation and close up the wall in (this shack in in a new room I added to my detached garage.

NEMA 6-15 for up to 15A; NEMA 6-20 for up to 20A; NEMA 6-30 for up to 30A; etc.

There is *no* standard among amplifier manufacturers, and every amplifier I've ever seen which operates from a 240V line comes with no plug at all -- just a power cord.  It's up to you to install the plug, to mate with whatever receptacle you have.

hi,

if you amp specs a 20 amp branch circuit,
then you will need the 20 amp plug and
receptacle along with #12 wire.

if you don't have the amp yet,
you can run # 10-2 NM with ground
(good to 30 amps) and install the
correct plug/outlet later after
the wall is up.
