What can be done to help?
« on: June 13, 2002, 11:10:41 AM »

My cellphone has an option to ask for a password every time it is turned on.  I wish my HT had that feature so that it would be useless to most thieves.  For that matter, it would also be a good way to keep unauthorized parties from using the HF rig!

How about using fingerprint recognition in software driven radios? A thumbprint to turn the radio on or off and self destruct if someone tries to "hack" it. Since it is possible with home computers now, can it be far behind in radios?

Or maybe a retna scan? DNA? Voiceprint analyzer? Brainwave analyzer? Do you really want to quadruple the cost of your already $1200 HF rig so nobody else can use it?? I know, how about a radio that makes you spin around 32 times, bark like a dog and the do the hokey-pokey before you can use it?

I think the origonal post about a password is a little more logical.

You don't need a retina scanner for those kinds of rigs

even if they do get stolen.

I think some of you may not totally understand the nature of a real thief. They steal, period. That's what they do.They don't have to know what it is they are stealing.Password, please, by the time they figure out that your radio needs a password, they have the radio and you don't.

the password idea is the best idea, the thumbprint idea is also a good idea, but that should be an option, if you buy a new car you have the choice of options just like the tone decode board does not come in all radios it should be the same. But my main reason for this post is that believe it or not motorola higher end portables have that option. saber 2's in the programming parameters you can enter a 4 digit passcode, but there is a way to bypass, but i wont let the cat out the bag.

Who would want a radio that self destructs?....suppose you tipped a few on Friday night then came home after 2am to play radio and can't remember your password?....BOOM!  possibly a sobering experience.
