Stolen Gear
« on: May 21, 2007, 06:17:35 PM »

I found a good way to avoid stolen gear on eBay.

I come out and directly ask the seller "What's the serial number of ...  I want to check and make sure it's not on the manufacturer's "hot sheets" before I bid.

You know something?  Each time I did this and looked back the next day, the eBay listing had been canceled!!!

I've done this mostly with current Motorola ht's and current very high-end HP/Agilent test equipment.

And 9 out of ten it's either the seller's first auction or one of his first five or six.

Same here I was going to buy a XTS 5000 that I saw on eBay and I also asked the seller for the serial number on the radio and the next day not only was the auction closed but the seller is not a registered user anymore

Quite a few sellers of 'hot' Motorola HTs (particularly in quantity one or two) are in fact employees of the entity they 'acquired' the radio from.  They frequently fall into a radio that was not assigned to them and figure they can get some quick cash by selling it.

They are attempting to be anonymous on eBay - not realizing that eBay will provide the seller's info (it's harder to hide when you have to provide a credit card number to pay the eBay seller fees !)
