FT-817 Stolen from my luggage

That is both unfair to the vast majority of TSA personnel who are trying very hard to do a thankless job AND the first statement borders on slander.

FT-817 Stolen from my luggage

Sept 15 2007 transiting from Canada through SanFran on my way to AKL (New Zealand). I was advised i shouldnt carry a radio transmitter as carry-on in the states so i put my ft-817 in a suitcase.  When i arrived in NZ, 1 bag was missing, the one that had my ft-817 w/W4RT Battery installed + mic + vhf/uhf dualband magmount, all in a red canvas bag. The bag arrived the next day.  When i got it there were inspection cards inside the bag from "Covenant Security" SFO saying my bag had been inspected. And no red bag with my rig/gear.

Filed a claim with SFO Aviation Security, they say they investigated and pulled the tapes and it shows my bag with the rig was inspected and sent down the belt with radio inside.  So who knows where it was taken from, coulda been SFO Baggage Handler, Air NZ baggage guy in Akld or the cabbie that drove my bag to where i was staying in Akld!!

MORAL OF THE STORY- DONT PUT RIGS IN YOUR LUGGAGE.

Anyway just in case a FT817 (not the D model) shows up for sale somewhere, my s/n is 1C170215. Had W4RT Battery, Yaesu carry-case, std mic & stock rubber duck antenna, plus a dual-band magmount all in a 14" X 16" red canvas carry-bag.

Sorry to hear about your FT-817.  My XYL had $700.00 stolen from her purse in Omaha NE a few years ago by TSA people during her personal check on the way to the airplane. Finally caught the crook on the video tape, and in those days they still were fairly honest to admit that one had done this. Have another friend who had his fathers family heirloom binoculars stolen from his brief case and had gotten on the airplane before he noticed it and of course it was too late.  Be advised that TSA people in many airports have stolen many items during the "security" check!  It is not at all uncommon.  If it has value, insist that you keep it in your sight as you go through security and if there is resistance to doing so ask for a supervisor or a police officer to monitor the operation during your security "check"  Sad but true.

Next time take your rig with your carry on.
Whoever told you that you can not carry with you, does not know what he is talking about.
I travel 30-50 thousand miles a year, inside and outside the US and I ALWAYS take my WHOLE radio station as part of my carry-on.
Just FYI this is what I carry what me through every airport:
FT817 and THP HL 100Bdx amplifier or IC7000, depending on the trip
Li-ion battery and charger or power supply
Z100 tuner or T1 tuner
Coax cable
Wire antennas (2)
Portable key, mic, headphones, jumpers, cables, etc
I even took last year in an international flight (4 different planes) an SGC 237 with all the counterpoises
So, my friend, do your own experience.
Even now, that the security level is ORANGE in the US, I travelled the last five weeks and I went through all the airports without a single problem, some airports don't even bother in opening the case
I have never been asked for my license either.
These days they are looking for explosives, nothing else.

I pack ALL radio's in my carry-on luggage.  They are in seperate bags so it is easy for the x-ray operator to find the battery packs that look like explosives and call them out.  They open the bag, I tell them where the mistaken items are located and all is well.  Do NOT pack radio's or any expensive electronics in checked luggage.  You would be suprised at what I carry on in my luggage most of which does not get opened any more.

I had the same cpmment about my Icom 730 and mentioned to the guy that by Law I can't leave it out of my site. As I had a feeling they wanted it. I took as a hand carryed item and they left me alone on it.
I also carry a Hand held radio and never been stopped so far but been expecting it. I hate TSA as I have had many items stolen from the check ins not the carry on items, including mini screw drivers for my glasses and radio items.
They claim its not on tape but they got it anyways.

And what law is that, or were you just lying to him?

Sorry to read you had your 817 stolen. I have always travelled with my 817 or SG2020 as carry-on in a Pelican case conforming to carry_on specs. It was always opened by inspectors in the USA and the UK but never a problem. I am sorry you didn't express your concern at the time. There were certainly a lot of laptops on board during your flight, no doubt.

if you can, CARRY anything of SUBSTANTIAL VALUE in your carry on.

in 2001 i was going from jakarta to bangkok and bought an icom AT-160 tuner that was packed in my checked suitcase. to a normal person it doesnt look like it could have any value so i was kinda surprised.
in BKK i opened suitcase and it was gone. lesson learned. the icom ic-7000 i bought in singapore i certainly carried it on the plane with me. some countries will not let you bring a transceiver without first getting authorization etc.... so they can use this excuse to take your stuff and not bother to let you know, depends how crooked they are.

Sorry to hear about your FT-817.

I never carry anything of value in checked luggage, ever. All cameras, computers, electronics, valuables, etc come with me. I've travelled both domestically and internationally and have never had a problem. I trust nobody that works in an airport, especially after reading that they do hire people with criminal records. No thanks, I like my stuff.. I'll carry it.
