SteppIR 2 to 3 element Upgrade?
« on: February 13, 2007, 06:35:20 AM »

I really like my SteppIR 2 element, and am thinking about  upgrading to the 3 element. If you have done this upgrade, sis you see a noticeable improvement? Its hard to tell if it will be worth the upgrade - just by reading the specs.

The 2 element is on a Force-12 LPT-1242 that can support 8 sq ft load at 60 mph (I crank it down when we get the rare 40+ mph winds).

It looks nice and stealth right now and would like more gain and better F/B, but really want to see a big difference to make it worth the effort.

The three element upgrade is definitely   worth the effort. You pick up almost 2 dB of gain but more important is the increase of 13 dB front to back, 18 dB front to side and the ability to 180 degree the antenna or go by directional. The boom is only 16 feet which no one will notice.

2-L to 3-L: Absolutely yes. 3-L to 4-L: Hmmm.... Include 7/10MHz upgrade with 3-L: Yes, if you like 40/30 metres, but some would say it is not as aesthetically pleasing...but I wouldn't say that. Specifications can be deceiving. User comments, though anecdotal, seem to indicate the 3-L is the sweet spot between performance, cost, ease of installation and looks (if that's important).
