I have a Kenwood Th-D7AG which I am having a hard time
programing it off the computer.  I have downloaded the software from Kenwood's site, I have the cable which come with the HT, but everytime I try to download it I get a "Communications time out error"  Can someone help me with this??

There have been many reported problems with the
Kenwood (and other radios) and some combination of
laptops and Microsoft Windows. In some cases, the
serial level was too low. In other cases, it was
that Windows wasn't sticking to the serial standard.

In any case, if you're using a laptop, try doing
the programming from a desktop. If one version of
Windows doesn't work, try it from another version
from a neighbors machine.

I made up all sorts of frequency lists before I went
on a road trip and had planned on downloading them
along the way from my laptop. After a couple hours
of frustration in a hotel room, I came across the
above information. I've never been able to get my
radio programmed from my laptop. (However, the serial
port works fine for other applications.)

One final point... If you haven't tried wa3hrl's
software for programming Kenwood radios, link700
(http://www.wa3hrl.com/), it's worth putting a big
eyeball on. I have found it far more functional
than Kenwood's own offering.

Make sure you have the correct version of the software.  I have the older TH-D7 (without modifications) and use the diskette that came with the cable.  I've helped others with the newer radios (D7AG) and we've loaded the software from the Kenwood site.  The newer version will not work with the older (unmodified) radios and visa-versa.

also, if you look at the diagram in the manual for the computer interface cable, they have pins 2 and 3 wired wrong on the PC side D9 connector. You need to swap pins 2 and 3 on the PC side D9 connector. TX and RX.


Just thought this might be causing some problems for people doing PC control that tried to make their own cable. This caused me some grief for about a day until I looked closer at the diagram.
