W7ETA writes: "dropping the CW test didn't change the question pool. So, it didn't effect the written tests at all."

Not in 2007.

But consider the history...

Before the 2000 restructuring, there were 5 different written exams: Novice (30), Tech&TechPlus (35), General (35), Advanced (50), Extra (40). Each license required its own test and all the tests for the license classes below it. (The numbers in parentheses are the number of questions on each test, to the best of my recall).

In 2000, not only were the code tests reduced to just one 5 wpm test, but the written exams were reduced as well. Technician became a single 35 question test made from the combined Novice and Technician, General stayed at 35 questions, and the Extra went to 50 questions from the combined Advanced and Extra.

I like to use the The W5JCK Amateur 2008 Extra Exam Question Pool with Correct Answers and Guide to the Mathematical Problems.

Jack does a great job working with math problems on the Extra exam.

I do not know if you are still looking for study material; but, I passed my extra today, I have no idea what my score was, they did not tell me. I used http://www.hamtestonline.com/ and a few online books. I recommend at least taking a look at this publication http://www.arrl.org/files/file/Instructor%20resources/ExtraClassSylalbus2009jan-AD7FO.pdf

I had studied electronic technology in a community college certificate program over 20 years ago. So, quite a bit of the material was a refresher. I would recommend checking with the local radio club and see if they ever run a class. While I was at the test they mentioned that they were preparing to start a series of classes for General and Extra.

Just use the ARRL Extra Class License Manual and hamtestonline, just give yourself a month or two to learn the info that is there.  I did buy the Extra Q&A and found it useless to me, it was easier for me to learn the formulas and theories than just the correct answers

The best way I found was a combination of Ham Test Online and the book The Fast Track to Your Extra Class Ham Radio License by Michael Burnette, AF7KB.
Ham Test Online was the primary tool I used but there were questions where I did not understand concepts behind the correct answer. Ham Test Online had brief explanations, but for me to remember the answers, I had to truly "know" the answers by understanding the material. That's where the book came in. The book had clear, well written explanations to allow me to comprehend the material. I previous bought all the ARRL books, Gordon West books and flash cards, but it was the above combo that did the trick. Your mileage may vary.

Pick a VE test date about a month out and study about an hour a day. Good Luck!

I understand that your new to QRZ and your suggestions are very good. But you might want to check the dates on posts, before you post. The one you posted to is from June 2010. We all post to a zombie thread accidentally, once in a while.

I had the old Tech plus (general written, novice code) since 1976.  And when they decided to make 5WPM good enough for the extra, I went and took the advance and the old extra writtens back in 2000.  Passed and got the CSCEs which I redeemed for the extra upgrade the day the change went into effect for the "nickle extra".   ;D

Note that the mess on 14.313 existed before this change, and the lids had to have passed 13 or 20WPM (unless they got a doctor's note).

I know an extra who is just learning to solder, but he can write good software, something I can't do...

I used both the Gordon West book and the ARRL Extra Class License Manual.  I started with West's book but I wanted to understand more about the topics.  The ARRL manual helped in that regard.  If I had to choose between the two, I'd choose the ARRL publication.  With that said, I'm glad I got both.  I felt prepared on exam day and passed.
