Heard the NA1SS today
« on: July 04, 2010, 03:38:57 PM »

I usually keep the 2-meter rig in my shack tuned to 145.8 MHz just in case the space station passes by.  It has always been quiet.

A few minutes ago (about 2210Z on 4July), I was sending CQ on the 15M band when the 2-meter rig comes to life with "Any station, any station, this is NA1SS over".   I just about had a heart attack!    He called twice, I tried to answer twice on the odd split frequency (maybe 144.9 MHz).   No response,  I tried again on simplex, still no response.   Bummer.

I don't know if it was someone yanking my chain.  But it sure was exciting.  I checked the locator website, and sure enough, the space station was overhead at the time.

oh well, maybe next time....

According to NASA's website, the region 2 uplink frequency is 144.49. It doesn't look like 144.9 is used for anything.

sure enough...   Looks like I dyslexified the transmit frequency :)

Now I know why he wasn't hearing me, even though I could hear him with a solid S6.

Well, it's sorted out now.   I'll just leave the radio on and try again next time.

Mike, I sure was glad to read your post - I thought I was going crazy!

I, too, heard that same CQ, and I had my TX set to 144.490, but still no reply.  Not sure why I couldn't get thru either, as I had him S8-S9 (full quieting)...certainly whet my appetite for more, though!!

I worked them yesterday, Sunday July 11, 2010 at 2205Z.  They had a relatively free weekend and Col. Doug Whellock was operating NA1SS.  The  uplink frequency for region 2 is 144.490 MHz FM.  This afternoon they were on packet radio on 145.825 MHz.  They always have a great signal... see what a good location does, HI.

I was driving around with my family in North Georgia this past weekend (July 10th), and being far from most repeater activity, I set my dual VFO rig (8900) to ten meters simplex, and the NA1SS download frequency.  Never bothered to check where the station was, or when it might pass, and knew it was very unlikely that I'd hear anything...

Sure enough, just moments later, I heard the station calling CQ with a strong signal.  Tried to call him on the correct frequency, but never made contact.  Have no idea where it was, or which direction it was going.  Only the second time I've heard the station on FM voice from my truck.  Kinda neat :)
