I renewed a couple of months ago online and it was easy. Pretty much like any online thing just follow the instructions.  The Hardest part was paying that $70 bucks for both the Wife's and my own renewal. Not that the payment was hard to do, but the thought of letting go of that $70 was a little disconcerting, but hey, it was two people for 10 years each.  Not all that much in reality.

Not really sure why it is so difficult to renew. When I renewed 2 years ago I went through the ARRL and they did it for me. No problem at all.
I think it was through the VEC program. It was all completed over the telephone.

You must not have been paying attention to the recent changes.

2 years ago, there were no fees for US amateur licenses.

2 years ago, the old CORES system was still in operation.

2 years ago, all you had to renew was to go to the FCC website, log in to your FRN account, and do a few mouse clicks.

That's all changed now. If someone hasn't created a new account on the new CORES system, they have to do that. Then they have to link it to their FRN, Then they have to log in, pay the fee, and renew.

Different game today.

Think of it as "less than a penny a day" - because that's what $35 for 10 years works out to.

---

For many years, FCC would only renew amateur licenses during a 90 day period before expiration, or for 2 years after expiration. Upgrades, address/name changes and other modifications did not result in a renewal.

With one exception: A new vanity call results in an automatic renewal, no matter where someone is in the license term.

This created a loophole that provided a way to avoid the renewal fee for 10 years, during the period between when FCC announced the fees and when they actually went into effect.

Too late now - the fees are in effect. But for a while there.....

From http://www.arrl.org/fcc-license-counts

the number of current unexpired FCC issued amateur licenses held by individuals on September 30, 2022 was:

Novice:                    6,415      (0.8%)
Technician            390,141     (50.6%)
Technician Plus               0       (0.0%)
General                186,352     (24.1%)
Advanced               34,867       (4.5%)
Extra                    154,434     (20.0%)

Total                    772,209

Percentages may not add up to exactly 100.0% due to rounding.

No new Novice or Advanced licenses have been issued since April 2000. However, the totals for those classes may sometimes show an increase over prior numbers due to renewals in the grace period.

This is not a new all-time high. It is provided to avoid a large gap in the timeline.

The all-time high total of 780,526 occurred November 24, 2021

That’s strange, but I renewed just over a year ago in April 2021. That’s not 2 years. The ARRL did everything for me over the phone and with a credit card. I remember paying the 10 dollar fee. ??  Maybe the change was in the past year, not sure.

The FCC fees went into effect April 19, 2022. If you renewed a year ago, you didn't pay the FCC fee because it was before they went into effect. The $10 you paid was pay ARRL for doing the renewal work for you.

The old CORES system was retired July 15, 2022. If you renewed a year ago, old CORES was still in effect.

Oh ok, now I understand. At least I have 8.5 years to go before I have to mess with it again. Thanks for the clarification.

Lost is a good choice of words. The loss will greatly accelerate as boomers die off.
