CORRECTION TO EARLIER POST:

From http://www.arrl.org/fcc-license-counts

the number of current unexpired FCC issued amateur licenses held by individuals on November 17, 2022 was:

Novice:                    6,369      (0.8%)
Technician            389,060     (50.6%)
Technician Plus               0       (0.0%)
General                186,452     (24.1%)
Advanced               34,687       (4.5%)
Extra                    154,542     (20.0%)

Total                    771,110

Percentages may not add up to exactly 100.0% due to rounding.

No new Novice or Advanced licenses have been issued since April 2000. However, the totals for those classes may sometimes show an increase over prior numbers due to renewals in the grace period.

This is not a new all-time high. It is provided to avoid a large gap in the timeline.

The all-time high total of 780,526 occurred November 24, 2021

Getting pretty close to 10,000 licensee's lost in just a year.
Lost is a good choice of words. The loss will greatly accelerate as boomers die off.

Maybe not.

Let's take a closer look at the numbers.

November 24, 2021:

Novice:                    6,905
Technician             396,998
Technician Plus               0
General                 186,143
Advanced                36,244
Extra                    154,256

Total                    780,526

November 18, 2022:

Novice:                    6,368
Technician            389,065
Technician Plus               0
General                186,474
Advanced               34,689
Extra                    154,548

Total                    771,144

And the difference:

Novice:                Loss of 537
Technician            Loss of 7,913
General                Gain of 331
Advanced             Loss of 445
Extra                   Gain of 292

Total                    Loss of 9,112

The losses in Novice and Advanced are to be expected because those licenses have been unavailable to new issues for more than 22 years. In fact, it's amazing that there are any left.

The biggest number is the loss of Technicians. 87% of the loss in the past year is due to the decline in the number of Technicians. Some of that is upgrades to General and Extra, but the gains in those two license classes don't begin to explain the huge loss of Technicians. If you look at the history recorded in this thread, the number of Technicians has been steadily growing for decades....so, why have their numbers suddenly started dropping in the past year?

might have something to do with $35 extortion maybe? considering how many got licensed as a tech caught they were told by arrl emcomm wacker type groups they could save the world with a baofeng. only for them to realize nope they ain't going to be saving the world they only thing they can do is to listen to the local repeater only activity is the once a week radio check "net" they figure why should i waste money on a license?

Interesting numbers!  I was just wondering how these numbers compare to the number of licenses issued by the FCC to CBers at the peak of the CB craze in the 1970s?
