Using MT Gold program to learn code?
« on: February 13, 2002, 02:58:42 AM »

I got the computer program MT Gold from a fellow ham.  I've only gotten through the first 8 letters so far.  I was wondering if MTG is considered a good program or is there a better one?  I'm a code-challenged person (see recent headline eHam.net article: Why Johnny Can't Learn Code), as I am primarily a visual learner.  I've found that using headphones, as opposed to an open speaker, seems to help.  This may be a disadvantage in the testing, as I understand they just play the tape on a boom box at the front of the room.

I don't know about MT Gold, but I used CodeQuick, and am extremely satisfied with it. I got to 5wpm in about 3 weeks, and was up to 7wpm by test time (2 weeks later). I am now up to 12wpm, which is about 3 months since I started, and I'm not as diligent about practice recently.

As far as the test goes, they had headphones for us, as the test was in the same room as the written. I guess each test is different. I'd suggest bringing a set of headphones, and if you're the only one there, they'll probably let you use them. I'm a VE, and under those circumstances I'd let you.

K7IHC and any others interested.

If the VE team running the testing session doesn't have headphones for listening to the code test get up and walk out! They are doing you a huge disservice. I speak from experience. The first code test I took was in a hospital conference room that was 75 X 100ft. The ambient noise level was enough to wake the dead and that's not counting the lovely echo produced by the boom box CW bouncing off the rear wall.

If the VE team is competent they will provide headphones or allow you to use a set your comfortable with. If they don't, walk away and find a different team to test with.

Good luck to all!

Here the VEs Give the person Doing a Code test a set of headphones to use! I don't know that from Person experience "Yes I am still working on my Code" but my father took the same code test and they had earphones!
