Something I regret is the intersection of the fiscal austerity measures in many countries with the view that short wave is "old technology."  International SW broadcasters seem to be dropping like flies--Radio Sweden about a year ago, Radio Slovakia, and Radio Prague, and significant cutbacks elsewhere--i.e., Radio Nederland, some loss of BBC programming, and Radio Canada International ceasing its broadcasts to the US.

What Western countries should realize is that while oppressive regimes can easily "turn off" access to the Internet for their people, these regimes are unable to block SW reception.  If Western countries want to ensure that people everywhere have access to relatively objective news and views, they must keep broadcasting on short wave.  In addition, there are huge populations that don't even have access to the Internet.

I also reflect on how much I've learned about foreign countries from listening to their radio broadcasts.

Shortwave listening has been a great hobby for me over the past 40 years.  Although I will say that the streaming audio over my Internet radio doesn't fade and is without static crashes, and ditto with respect to the Sirius satellite radio in my car, you'll only get my several vintage short wave receivers away from me by prying them from my cold, dead fingers.
