Bird Coax Switch Grounding
« on: May 31, 2013, 09:01:40 AM »

Hi,
Should the Bird Coax Switch be Grounded?  There is no grounding port on the case but one of the rear screws could be doubled as a grounding port.  Any reason not to ground the switch?
Thanks, AA2NI

Why do you want to ground it? RF, lightning, electrical safety?

I come from a background that if it does not move you ground it.  I would like to think that grounding will help in eliminating RF should some be accumulated on the body of the switch.  i do use an Alpha 99 at full limit for short DX QSO's.  hope the Switch can handle it.  My other coax switches (this is the first Bird i have) all had a grounding lug.

The switch is already grounded--through the coax shields of the coax attached to it if those coaxs come through a bulkhead that is properly grounded.  If you ground the switch also, you may end up making ground loops with the coaxs, the switch and the bulkhead itself that may lead to problems associated with ground loops.  I would leave it as is--ungrounded.
