Considering the age and the possible condition of the parts in the 'unopened' boxes, the guy wants too much for these.

If those boxes were mine I would donate them to the Smithsonian and take the income tax write off.

Man, that might be the Beryllium stockpile of the century...

Why would anyone pay anywhere near that amount for THAT stuff?
If someone does, old PT Barnum was right....   ;D

I got a kick out of how he compares the value to an IC-7800 and FTDX9000MP.  Clearly he's never actually used an SB-104.

I was spared the experience. Just how bad was it?

The typical "Heathkit Experience" - not particularly sensitive or selective with a bit of drift.  That's when it worked.  They were plagued with intermittent connections in the board edge connectors (had plug in boards like the TR-7) and the PA had ineffective SWR protection, and the PA transistors were unobtanium even in the 1980's when I had mine.  I unloaded that turkey and felt grateful for breaking even on it.

Love the styling though, with all the accessories in a row it was actually a pretty classy looking setup.  Almost as nice as the TR-7 setup I have now, that actually works.

A guy I know had one. Any time you met him, he had another tale of woe about it - and he was a design engineer in a radio development lab! Especially poor was PA stage reliability, and as K5LXP says, the PA transistors rapidly became unobtainium. There were some questions about how reliable  they were as transistors, which was probably why they disappeared.

Not only were those outputs able to die seemingly all by themselves with no detectable reason, the use of that Beryllium may have made sure that the OWNER died along with 'em as well...
