I think only if they tried opening them up. A bit like asbestos in your house - leave it alone, and there is rarely a problem. The trouble  comes at sale time, or if the local environmental people get involved.

A friend of mine has a SB-104, and it actually is a great rig to use.  Very convenient
for Field Day, where it is easy for most hams to sit down and figure out the controls.

But it isn't exactly stock inside.  The circuit blocks have been redesigned for 50 ohm
interconnections using small coax.  I have no idea whether the PA has been replaced,
but given how it gets used on Field Day it certainly is rugged.

So if you like the styling, it isn't impossible to make one work well.

Right now there are 153 watchers--and no takers.  Maybe if someone with money to burn wants a station setup just to look at...   ;D

I was making a joke there...

Personally, I'd run to no more than $10 for the lot but then, I'm old, idle and mean......

 :D  We're ALL getting there...

Personally, if the guy was at all realistic about it, he would start the bidding at $1,195 instead of flat out asking $11,995.  He could probably get some takers at that price--and the bidding could possible go up from there.  That 'auction' is a classic case of   "My way--or the highway!"

You may be right, CJS, but figuring that a lot of the electrolytics are likely to be past it and most of the carbon comp resistors out of spec, I'd be a bit dubious at $1195.

Funny that I can resurrect 1950's 450 volt electrolytics and not 25 volt 1995 ones....

Even with the bad electrolytics and possible carbon resistor deterioration, I would figure that the value of the equipment would be that--if it's in good condition. (visually)

Those 1950s electrolytics were made with heavier, thicker insulation than the newer 1995 ones--insulation that wouldn't break down as fast under voltage at all.  The 'plates' of the capacitor couldn't be smaller and still have the same capacitance, yet the newer caps are smaller--the size has to be saved somewhere!

The listing has "ended" (at the end of its bid period) without apparent purchase.

There have been at least a couple other E-bay "unbuilt Heathkit" auctions where when the items sold, they were immediately put up for bid again by the "buyer".

I suspect it's some elaborate shill bidding scheme but as long as E-bay is raking in the fees I doubt they'll care.

Having a "business model" of buying overpriced stuff on E-bay then reselling same item on E-bay... sounds very dubious to me.

Well, notice had gone out a few days ago (from E-bay) that the listing had been redone.  Here is the new listing:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Unbuilt-Unassembled-Complete-Heathkit-SB-104A-HF-Transceiver-Station-9-kits-/300941958217?ssPageName=ADME:B:WNARL:US:1123

The seller has dropped the price $2K and is now saying that if not sold this time, the kits will go back into storage for an unspecified amount of time.  Seems like they have their pricing ideas and won't back down.

Let's see if he gets any takers!  I doubt it, but you never know!

Well since it is not even a 'bid' item yea he is stuck on his price.

So back into 'storage' it will go. Don't know what good that will do.
