Annoying Beeping!
« on: September 12, 2013, 01:51:03 AM »

Got a very strange beeping going right across HF every 50 to 100Khz in places and some places stronger than others! It's driving me mad and looks awful on my SDR, I can't pinpoint where it is coming from I have tried 3 different HF sets, switching off pcs and tvs so it must be coming from a source away from my house.
Anyone know what might cause this? there is around 2/3 seconds between each beep and a 5/6 second pause then starts again!

I have seen unusual interference like this before but usually at worst affecting 1 band say 1Mhz bandwith but this is everywhere I have so far looked (7-29Mhz).

Got a very strange beeping ...

Can you describe the "beeping" - interval and so on?

On another forum someone just told me it was prevailent on 10m with them to, there is 300 miles between us so must be from further afield than my own QTH.

It is a 1 second long beep tone which goes something like... beeep.....Beeep.....Beeep.. 5 second pause.. Beeep.....Beeep and so on all day and evening for last 4-5 days here. the beeps are about 2 seconds apart accept from the 5 second pause every so often before restarting.

I first heard it only on 10m but yesterday and today heard it right down to 40m (not been any lower to test).

So are you saying it is an unmodulated carrier that you hear a beep from, perhaps because you are listening to it in sideband or CW mode, or is it an AM signal that is modulated with a beep tone?

Are you experiencing ALE (Automatic Link Establishment) transmissions, which removes some of the HF operational variables and complexities for the user. ALE provides "Link Quality Assessment", a complex and continuous series of polling and RF tests which determine the optimum transmission frequencies at any given time.

I think you, or a neighbor, has acquired a plasma TV, cheap compact fluorescent bulbs, or a crappy wall-wart power supply for some gadget or another.
