Flex 1000
« on: September 19, 2013, 12:59:12 AM »

Hi, I am about to receive a Flex 1000 at the weekend and will be my first sdr transceiver (have sdr receivers) It will come with the delta 44 soundcard and heard the audio is not so loud with this soundcard, Does anyone have any experience with this? Perhaps there is a mic that will go with it that will work well?
Any info or tips with this radio will be great.

Thanks Carl 2E1CLS.

You'll quickly find that the Delta 44 has extremely low transmit audio and lots of low level motorboating. I had those symptoms on a couple of different machines. If I remember correctly it didn't have any preamp and many users were using outboard EQ's to make up for the cards deficiencies.  I finally sold that set up and got another with the FA66.  The difference was amazing.

You'll still have plenty of fun with the Delta 44 on receive, just don't beat yourself over the head trying to make it work well.

I think i'm going to buy a FA66 to save any messing around from the start! What mic would you suggest? I was thinking a Heil pro headset or something along those lines.

Thanks Carl.

Hi Carl,

I just used an old Electrovoice that sounded great.  You might want to invest in two ground loop isolators from Radio Shack to use on the TX and RX audio lines.  Those will help flatten out the DC "hump" on the 1000's panadapter.  Though that was more of an issue on the Delta44 than the FA66 or the PreSonus external sound boxes.

Thanks Carl.

With my SDR100/FA66 setup (now retired but still kept) I used a cheap dynamic 'Studio' Mic from Maplins, audio reports were very positive.

Ok so perhaps the soundcard and equalization on Power sdr is whats more important here. I think I will save myself a few quid on the mic and concentrate on buying a FA66.

Thanka for your input guys.

Carl,

When you have the FA66 take a look at Nigels (G7CNF) youtube video on setting up the Powersdr audio chain, it walks you through the process 'end to end' & gives some really good tips.
BTW. like others I started off using the Delta44 and was constantly 'tweaking' but never really got it right.Moving to the FA66 was the wisest move I made.
