Adding more wire to ¼ wave inverted “L”
« on: March 27, 2014, 02:34:12 PM »

My ¼ wave 160 meter inverted “L” starts at the output of MFJ 971 antenna tuner on my desk in the basement, then goes up and out the window about 10 feet to a strain relief and proceeds up 45 feet before running horizontal another 75 feet or so.  A dozen or so radials also come into the shack to a common ground plate and the tuner.

Not surprisingly, with such a low vertical height (45 ft.) EZNEC modeling shows that the pattern is sort of a squashed ball with a radiation angle of 25 degrees.

I read somewhere, that if I increased the antenna length by another 1/8 wavelength, I would raise the maximum current point and improve radiation. However the modeling show that because of the low height I would just create more of a ball shaped pattern.

Has anyone tried adding wire to their vertical to move the max current point?

Make sure you select and view you vertical and horizontal polarization patterns.

I have a model and info on my extra-long 160m inverted-L at http://www.w0btu.com/160_meters.html#inv-l_antenna . I think you'll find the info there useful.
