My choice of radio at any given time is driven by the task at hand.  All of the radios I own have their strengths.  I won't define aspects of performance as a weakness unless a particular radio is sub par in it's areas of design.  My choices are listed in alphabetical order as follows:

Alinco DX-R8T
CCrane Skywave
Sony ICF-2010
Tecsun BCL-2000
Tecsun PL-380
Tecsun PL-880
Yaesu FT DX 3000

Not a single clinker in the bunch, just different.  I enjoy using them all.

Listened to an hour of RHC last night on the SG-2020 2.7kHz CW mode zeroed using a short whip. Not bad. Full scale. Not Hi Fi.

Im old school here.  I have all digital receivers, but my favorite is my DX-200 analog receiver.  I also have an old dx-160, and a DX-394.

When ham radio I use SDR (Flex-3000 and Anan-10E).  When shortwave surfing nothing else is better than my old frog.  The Yaesu FRG-7 is one of my favorites from the seventies.  I have three of them.

I like the Kenwood R-300. Maybe it reminds me of a Hammarlund. It's not 'hot' for amateur bands (cw/ssb) but AM nice.

As to Yaesu FRG-7700 I never liked. It seemed insensitive and cheap. Mistake was not ordering accessory 'fine' tuning when purchased. For amateur bands it was poor..or terrible.... listen to the strongest of ssb signals...Maybe mine was never aligned right. 160 was a dead zone. I actually sold it recent and new owner seemed experienced in alignment stuff, etc.

I see many using the newer Alinco.  Maybe now is the time to pick up an 'extra' if the price is good. (might say I do not hear many grumbles which is a disease if anything is lower cost)

Now 6/15/15,  TEN TEC RX-340, ICOM R-75, PALSTAR R-30.  THE TEN TEC BEATS EVERYTHING EVEN MY KENWOOD TS-590, WHICH IS DARN GOOD.

USE TWO ANTENNAS ON ALL THEREE, MARCONI L, COMET CHA250B.

I don't think I've come across anything that compares to the 870 on am signals, not bad on ssb either. I did like the audio of a nrd535 and 545 however but they didn't have the same lasting impression.

I just added a Drake TR7 and a Yaesu FRG7700 to the shack.
I am really enjoying both.

I listen with several receivers. It often depends on what I'm listening to and what frequencies. I have the following receivers:

Ten-Tec RX-320
Ten-Tec RX-340
Ten-Tec RX-350
Yaesu FRG-100 w/optional 500hz. CW filter
Icom IC-R71A
Knight Kit Span Master
Heathkit GR-81
Hammarlund HQ-100A
Hammarlund HQ-180A

I use a center fed 210 foot long wire averaging about 25 feet high, a base fed vertical wire about 50' up at the top among trees, and an all-band rotatable loop with a preamplifier and TV antenna rotor.

I use several receivers. Now I mainly use the ELAD FDM-S2 sdr radio, but I like to make comparisons so I often also switch on my Kenwood R-5000 or the venerable FRG-7. When on vacation I use a Sony ICF-SW7600G or a GR.

Occasionally I also use the IC-756pro3 rx. Excellent but lacking sync am.

Kenwood TS590S and Wellbrook 1530PE.
The Kenwood is really ok after removal of the BC-traps(see Service Manual), which otherwise destroys performance on 11 and 15 MHz.

I also have an Icom R70 which i bought as my first SW radio 30 years ago, and it is a joy to listen to due to being all analogue.

My Sangean ATS-909X is not used much due to bad QC.
It is mostly DEAF on SW and its BFOs are about 150 Hz off frequency, quite an achievement at 450KHz, about 300 PPM! I most likely will never buy Sangean again...
I have the SM, but opening and adjusting the radio without taking Everything apart (including the fragile flat cable) is a challenge due to its construction.

Even after collecting several old and new HF radios, the Drake R8 with external speaker, tone control full left (bass) and sync. detector engaged is just unbeatable.  It is the closest thing to hi-fi for SWL'ing.
