Aggravating, isn't it? It only works once in a while.

I wish I could automate the process of logging back out and back in to make it work.

Might as well keep saying it - this version of SMF is literally years outdated. The administrators need to put in the time to get it running. It's completely free.

It's right here -

I'm not 100% certain, but I thought that even after I successfully marked all the threads as unread, I came back a few minutes later and two pages of unread threads appeared again. If it "happens" again, I'll try and remember to go back and compare the post times with when I did this, to be certain.

As for upgrading to a new version, the admins are probably holding back because they already have a ton of code changed in this one. Changing all that in the new version might be an enormous job. But one way to do that is to use a side-by-side file comparison program like Beyond Compare. That's what I did once, and it made the job fairly easy.

As I mentioned earlier in this thread, this bug is a known issue. Perhaps there is a simple fix available on the Simple Machines forum.

Whatever the case, can we PLEASE try to fix this? TIA. :-)

EDIT: Perhaps the fix is here: http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=311337.0;all

That's a lesson for them - don't customize it so much that you can't do your patches and upgrades. There's another way to have the extraneous menus and things around the forum, it's called a portal, and there are mods for them for the newest version of SMF, but they'll have to suck it up and make the leap. From what I've observed, I doubt they have enough time or the fire in the belly anymore for it. To even get them to respond to very simple requests like splitting off topic threads or the like would be a major success, but they won't even do things like that. The more time goes on the farther and farther behind the times the forum technology will be. And, when that happens a new ham forum run by a new person or group that looks better and runs better can take over the membership - I've seen it happen before.

It went back to working, and now it won't work again today.

But, who cares anyway?

Well, I know what you're saying, but sometimes that's easier said than done. Sometimes we just can't know that we should have or shouldn't have done something until afterwards. That's true of many things in life.  :-)

In any case, it didn't change for me here. Not yet, anyway.

Well, look at the vision statement -

"The site will stand above all other ham radio sites by employing the latest technology and professional design/programming standards, developed by a team of community programmers who contribute their skills to the effort."

If that's true they should have been keeping up with the SMF upgrades because that's "employing the latest technology and professional design/programming standards". So on the face of it, they aren't even adhereing to theor own vision statement. Most vision statements are a dime a dozen - they look and sound great at the start, but the essence of them are soon thrown by the wayside.

But forget the upgrade for a moment. Why can't we get some moderators to volunteer to help keep the place straightened up?

For example -

Move threads
Split threads that have two topics going on
Rename threads

and so on.

I've asked for a thread to be split on this board before and I got no answer - not yes, not no, just no answer. Why? If this forum has a board for site talk it's imperative that the Admins chime in. You know -actually talk about the site - what a concept. Otherwise it's not of much use.

There's a thread right now in the DX board that belongs on the antenna board (each major part of the forum is a board - not a forum as some say here), but it's not going to happen because the Admins don't seem to care, or don't have the time, or both, as far as I've seen. I'd volunteer to do maintenance sort of moderating tasks if they'd let me. I'm fully qualified to do them as I've owned and operated SMF forums for years.

I can think of all sorts of other things that would make the form more fun to look at. Things like ham -related avatars, member ranks, New post/No new post indicators that are related to ham radio (the little yellow post-it notes you see at the left). This is for ham radio - not devotees of Office Max or the 3M company.

Like I said, I just don't understand where the Admins are. Why don't they talk to us? Why don't they seem to care? If they don't have the time anymore, or don't care, they really should pass it along to people who do.

I also wonder how many people actually use the home page of this website. It's very cluttered and I myself have rarely looked at it, I mainly just use the forum and the reveiws. For example, the cluster - does anyone really use the cluster at eHam?I'm not saying some people don't use the home page, but is all that really worth the upkeep?

I've half a mind to just start a new forum just for DXers, at least from the start. There's a group on the DX board that get together now on a net, and if we had a forum that was  run professionally (lke I can do) withh good-looking updated form software we might be better off. The hosting really doesn't cost all that much, and I'd pay for that. I'd just need the members to mover over to it.

You never know what the future will bring ...  :o

Hello Captain Obvious.

You should leave and start another forum. I agree 100%.

Hello Captain Obvious.

Hi!

Even if I started one I wouldn't leave this one. I have friends here. Anyway - it seems you really have nothing intellectually to offer as relates to my comments - so I'm not taking you seriously.

Don - the thing is, if you disagree with me, tell me why. What is it you don't like about my suggestions. What would you do better? Why? I put my thoughts out here for anyone to read and if they agree or disagree to tell me why. I stepped up to the plate.

Just telling a person you disagree with no reason is a cop out, because it tells me you have nothing better to say. You jumped in, so if you have nothing to add other than "ditto" and "Hello captain obvious" then you won't garner any respect from me.

Don - why are you responding at all to this topic? Are your radios on the blink?
