TNC Engine For Raspian
« on: July 27, 2014, 11:37:28 AM »

Just getting introduced to the Raspi and Linux.  I am looking, haven't done much research yet, for a software TNC that will run under Raspian.  I am thinking something similar to AGW Packet Engine.  Heck it might even run under Raspian, I don't know.  Anyone have any suggestions in this area?

It's not a software TNC, but there's the TNC Pi.

And, as always, the standby:  soundmodem.

RE: "And, as always, the standby:  soundmodem."

But why?

A few guys have done side by side tests with soundmodem and Direwolf(and a few others)...
Direwolf decodes ~10 to 30% better.... Why waste time with soundmodem??

I'm sure soundmodem was great in its day... but does not have the latest code for the newer equip.

Now if that is all that will run on old equip. ,,thats fine....but a Pi will handle Direwolf.

Dire Wolf and Soundmodem are pretty close to each other as far as decoding goes. AGWPE is the one that seems to be lacking with decoding. I have run all three while listening to packet from the ISS and find AGWPE to be the worst.

Well, TNCs connect to Linux...but you specifically mentioned a 'TNC Engine.'

Since AGWPE allows other computers to use the TNC via IP, was this one of the features you are looking for?

If you are referring to setting up something like a soundcard TNC, you may wish to look here:

Dire Wolf and Soundmodem are pretty close.

If you are talking about the UZ7HO "Soundmodem" ...yes....(but it's windoze only)
The older Linux Soundmodem...No...

Which is why you never rely on the distro's supplied version.  Build soundmodem yourself.  Direwolf and newer soundmodem builds are pretty much on part for decoding.

Now, direwolf does lead when it comes to system load, though.  It's a touch lighter on systems, which is critical for embedded devices.
