10 Watt 10 Meter Radio
« on: October 31, 2014, 05:59:20 PM »

I have a cheap 10 watt 10 meter radio. I am not sure if it worth the time to install in my car. I would like to make distant contacts (different states or overseas countries).

What is the range of a 10 watt AM radio on 10 meters?  How many watts should a 10 meter car radio have?

I think you'll find AM on ten to be pretty sparsely populated, and not very efficient for making DX contacts.

10 meters can vary from having excellent world wide propagation with a wet noodle to being local coverage only.  Usually it's local only.  The world wide propagation only happens during the day, during high sunspots in the 11 year solar cycle.

Unless you have some ham friends who also have 10 meter radios, it probably won't be worth the trouble to install in the car.
