Title: Militia Groups Using Ham Radio

Some interesting reading here:

Militia Bootlegging On Ham Radio Frequencies

Ham Radio frequency-vigilante groups geolocate any transmitter from many miles away.
Hams tend to be extremely protective of their own frequencies, and many have RDF Direction Finding equipment or beam antennas that can easily geolocate militia bootleg transmissions. Also, Hams have a nasty tendency to file monitoring reports to the government, which leads to hefty fines and costly legal processes for the perpetrators. But, there are 3 really big common sense reasons for militia not to use ham radio frequencies:

There are groups around who are all Hams. Even at that those groups require everyone to attend an pass a in-depth hands on field test before they are allowed to carry a RX only radio, an most especially an type of transceiver at all.  Don't think for a minute everything is as pointed out in that article, as some groups are very in depth an into some very obscure ways to pass/gather info.

Had a couple of guys using a couple different UHF repeaters in the area about 3 years back ... some recordings were made, just to have on hand ... call look-ups (for the calls they were using) came back nada on ULS and QRZ.com etc. One day, I jumped in and said hi (as they were on a machine I am responsible for), and mentioned I had run their calls and didn't get any results back ... wondered if where ever they were "tested" was just slow or was the FCC slow ... long story short, they had no licenses, I said I would be glad to have them back when they got licensed ... have never heard from them again!

I applaud any fellow Hams who turn in anyone for misusing ham frequencies.

Not all of these groups are created equal.

From the article: "The symbolic power of the radio stems from its ability to instill fear..."

.....it's clearly written by someone with far left political leanings.

Or far-right. At some point extremists become difficult to tell apart.

Sometimes its not militia but occasional a$$ hats who think its fun to shoot antennas and other gear.
Thats where hidden cameras come in handy.

But we monitor traffic for illegal abuse.

I've confronted bootleggers a couple of times and both were not intentionally nefarious but just ignorant of the rules.  One was a group of hang gliders that ride the thermals over the mountain here.  They just plopped on a quiet frequency on 2M and had their in flight channel.  Another was a cross country race car guy using 2M to talk to the pit crew.  When you can buy equipment on the internet, turn it on and start using it I'm sure most don't give it a second thought beyond that.

If you're part of a "militia group" you are not very smart....  And probably don't really give a crap about laws or regulations unless you agree with them.

Rugged Radios, a race radio company as well as race team, does this.  They've made millions of dollars selling baofeng's to race teams.

They are in serious hot water with the Feecees right now.  Seems they where selling radios and telling the purchasers they could just use Rugged Radios race team license as their own.

The FeeCees didn't see it that way.

I used to pass Rugged Radios new shop every day.  10 million dollars in construction, 3 million dollars for the land.  At the beach.  In Pismo Beach (Arroyo Grande) California.  Definitely NOT cheap property.

A lot of these poor people who bought radios where just BS'ed by companies that worried about the dollar.  Not compliance.

Thats not exactly true
There are a few true militias out there that assist police and national guard.
The are well organized, highly disciplined, and highly educated.
They stand ready for action if called.

The problem is how they are portrayed by our greatest propoganda machine ( the news media)
Those you see on the media are "militia" only in name
Their interests are not order but selfish intent and lust for power.
The news just loves shoving the ignorance about to generate a negative view of miltia organizations.

And if you think about it, a true militia does not want national attention.
A false one however craves the media spotlight and will flash their name and their stupidity anywhere and any time.
