Title: K3NG / NanoKeyer build
Post by: KF0AEE on June 27, 2020, 04:56:38 PM
I'm in the process of building one of the K3NG-based smart keyers, in this case an Arduino Nano version using the $8 PC board from N7XG.net.

Just wondering if anyone has built one, and what kind of experience you had with it. The build seems pretty straightforward & simple - just stuff a board, configure / build / upload the code and put it all in a box with jacks & controls.. and maybe a screen.

So who's done one?

Thanks for posting!  I had looked at the code sometime back but wasn't up to a DIY board.  Thanks for the reference to the n7xg.net web site.  I ordered a board, and once I get it I will come up with a 3D printed enclosure for it.  Funny too as I have all the parts including the rotary encoder.

It should be a fun project and we should compare notes as we build/compile.

How is your project going?

I received the board from N7XG quickly.  It was a fast assembly and checked out fine.  I'm still printing out the 3D enclosure and feet, but it should be together in the next couple of days.

Discovered that if I selected nanokeyer_RevD I ran out of memory for the sketch using the rotary encoder so I had to disable some options. Obviously more software experimentation in order.

Or I could try a 10K linear pot which would free up a lot of memory by using an analog input instead of the rotary routines and restore full Winkeyer functionality.

A lot of Dupont connectors.  I think I'm becoming an expert in making multi pin Dupont connectors:)

Don't know how your build went, but mine was a blast.  A nice PCB, an easy build, and I designed a 3D printed case for it.

I've been corresponding with Dean N7XG and I am designing both an LCD (1602) and Winkeyer versions of simple 3D printable cases. More to follow.

I have been tardy in updating the OPs initial post.  It works great and I made a 3D printed case for it.  Details are here: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4596020

I have built many K3NG cw Keyers and I have a much better pc board then the one indicated in this thread.
