I just bought a FT5DR. I'm a complete newbie to APRS and have been reading forums and doing my research. But I still can't figure out how to connect it to my Windows machine so I can use a Windows APRS client. All help appreciated!

Just checking - you do understand that APRS is an analog packet data mode useable on both HF and VHF. Therefore it needs a packet signalling interface between the receiver audio out and computer sound input, and computer audio output into the radio input. This is usually a USB connection.

If FT5DR is similar to FT1-, FT2- and FT3DR in this regard, you can't use internal packet modem. It is not accessible by computer and only used internally to encode/decode APRS traffic. However, you could use sound card interface, just like with any other analog FM radio.
