New user, New FT818nd. When ever I try to transmit it says ERR TRAN. Advice was to do a hard reset (hold home when power up). This works as long as I don't change any settings, but when I go into the settings or any one of them and come back out, again every transmission says ERR TRAN. Ideas?
-
That sounds like an out of band error. Are you sure the rig is designed to transmit on the frequency you have selected?
-
Does it do it with a valid frequency and connected to a known good dummy load?

Is it a USA version? Those made for the home market may not be set up for the US band plan.

Perhaps it senses that you are posting with an invalid call sign...

Sounds like its not exiting settings properly. Might want to contact Yaesu support.

Good catch!
So maybe he bought it at a yard sale but didn't RTFM.
So what do you do ? Make a legit looking call sign and post your question to a Ham forum! :o

Maybe he's, she's, all the other possible pronouns is REALLY new and the FCC hasn't got this person in the database yet? Didn't know you had to have a call sign to post. Maybe I should change that.... ;D :D ;)
Back on topic the correct error message should be "TX ERROR".
-
It is TX ERR, sorry for that and I have been trying just to use the local club repeater. Band is set right at 144 and Mode FM. I have not broadcasted, just got Technician on Thursday. My call sign in the data base is KF0KAB but I paid to change to K0DWH, which doesn't show yet. So I screwed up. So much the first week or so to learn since radio came.

Thanks for the explanation of the call sign issue.
There is a good chance that when you are trying to transmit, that the transmit frequency is outside of the amateur band. This can be because you selected an out of band simplex frequency or because the radio is set to "offset" the transmit frequency from the receive frequency when you key the microphone. Offset is usually indicated by a plus or minus sign on the display. On two meters, the offset is + or - 600 kHz (0.6 MHz).

It did ship from Japan, so maybe the band plan idea has merit. I guess I will contact support at this point.

Except in his case, his call is known.

The Japan 2 meter band plan is from 144 MHz to 146 MHz. You could test those frequencies to see if it clears the error. Again, note if an offset is displayed.

Just heard back from Yeasu, the radio is for the Japanese market, not the US
Here is their reply to my issue:
Hello Dave.
Thank you for contacting Yaesu regarding your FT-818.
The Japanese model of this radio does not cover the full range of the amateur bands that we have here in the US.
Unfortunately, there is no simple fix to get this radio to cover the US amateur radio bands as there are differences in both the hardware and firmware.
It possibly could be rebuilt with US circuit boards, but this would cost more than the radio is worth, and as the manufacturer we are not permitted by FCC regulations to modify radios originally destined for a foreign market to get them to work in the US. I am sorry but there is no simple solution to this problem, and unfortunately there are many of these radios being imported into the US and finding their way into the marketplace.
If there is anything else I can help you with, please feel free to contact me.
Best regards,
Rodger Kerr

OUCH! I hope you got a REAL GOOD deal on it. It must cover some parts of the US bands at least?
-
Yikes on the reply from Yaesu. That's a fine welcome to a hobby. Now I have to ask where did you buy the FT-818? Ebay, used market? Hopefully not one of the brick and mortar stores like DX Engineering yet if you did buy from one of those I would think they would have a return policy.
-
New from a retail in Japan I found on ebay; is is will to accept back but its my shipping cost.
-
Bite the bullet and ship it back!
73 and welcome to amateur radio :)

check with your local club for radios, sometimes they have equipment from sk's that the resell for the club.
my radio (icom 200 series dual bander) works great. 55 watt output, easily programmable, and i got it for $70.00
thats in my truck.
Plus i was given another because it needed repairs ( new connectors and a resistor)
that one ill use in the shack with the jpole
some good advice is to join your local radio club, they will help you a lot.
and welcome to the world of Amateur radio.

"ERR TRAN" is Yaesu's term for "your doing something wrong"!
Glad you figured it out.
