Title: Yeasu FT-100D Transceiver - Closest Current Model?
Post by: K4BDA on November 25, 2022, 06:13:27 AM
A number of years back I had a Yeasu FT-100D mobile rig.

1 - What current Yeasu model would be a close replacement?

2 - Ditto for closest ICOM model (or others) ?

Thanks

Well, here is the deal.  They don't really make one any more. They have gotten away from the 10 lbs. of "stuff" in a 5 lb. bag concept. The Ft-857 was the Ft-100D replacement, but it is discontinued also, and for some time now. Icom does make something similiar the old Ic-7100, that is still current, but getting long in the tooth. The more or less replacement for the Ft-857 which was the replacement for the FT-100D is the FT-891. BUT it is ONLY 160-6 meters. NO 144 or 430 Mhz bands. It is a good radio for what it is, and it is on sale now in some places for $599. I have one in the mobile. I have a duoband FM rig for 2m and 70cm. in there also.  There were heating and cooling problems with the FT100D among other issues. Likewise with the Icom 7000. It seems to me the manufactures are getting away from the "shack in a box" concept somewhat. One advantage of having two radios in your mobile install is the ability to work HF and monitor your local repeaters at the same time. Not something you can really do with an "all in one".  Hope this helped.

Easy, the Parks On The Air program (POTA) has made the Yaesu FT-891 probably the most popular portable 100w HF radio around.

That said, I use a TenTec Eagle, has an awesome receiver :-)

Is TenTec still in business? I went to their website and it said they were moving but the store was not open to buy.

Just put Ten-Tec out of your mind. For your mobile it is hard to beat the FT-891. Best bang for our buck.  The rig will work 160 thru 6 meters, but the bands to worry about mobile are 40 thru 6. A little Tarheel II as a mobile antenna will work 80 meters, but anything but the huge mobile antennas are pretty lame on 80 unless you add wire to the whip as in a portable installation.

The 857D is a great radio. Even though they stopped making it, you can still find em for sale used. Make sure its a late serial with no display issues. I have one in the car and love it. I've always had one in my arsenal since they came out in 2003. I also had the FT100 when it came out. They had quite a few issues, but were repairable and once you took care of the problems, they were awesome.
