Title: ARRL 10 meter contest this weekend, Dec.
Post by: KH6AQ on December 06, 2022, 11:08:03 AM
Here is the contest you've all been waiting for, the ARRL 10 meter contest! CW, SSB or Mixed Mode as you like. It's looking like 10 meter propagation will be even better than last year.

Begins 0000 UTC Saturday and runs through 2359 UTC Sunday. Operate for a maximum of 36 hours out of the 48-hour period. Off times must be at least 30 minutes long.

Had fun with the time I was at home - 455 QSOs (including KH6AQ!) and 122 mults. Worked more KH8 than NE, RI and VT combined, which was zero, meaning no "Weekend WAS" this year.

On 10M the radiation pattern of my 135' OCF windom looks like a COVID bacteria or a porcupine - spiky in azimuth and elevation. Maybe that was why conditions seemed weird - short, spotlight EU openings - very rarely did a skimmer  in EU give me over a 10 dB SNR but then a 49 dB spot would pop up!

At least it wasn't a VHF contest, as in the past few years!

I only operated Sunday, got 111 QSOs, all phone. Conditions were pretty good, my 10m Moxon and MFJ magnetic loop worked well for me. I really like this contest because the band is so big, plenty of contacts above 28.5. So much room!

Oops, small typo in my report. Should be: "Worked more KH6 than NE, RI and VT combined..."

I worked exactly the same number of KH8s, P5s and NE/RI/VT stations: nil, to use World Cup lingo.

I guess I must have been lucky-I worked NE, VT and RI.  Couple of VT stations on.  Didn't do too much operating as other things were going on that weekend, but this is always one of my favorite contests of the year, along with the IARU contest and Illinois QSO party.  Love the mixed mode contests, plus the 1981 10 meter contest was the first contest I really operated as KA0IFG/N.

10 meter propagation was quite good compared to the past few years and I made CW WAS pretty quickly.

Three of use here on Hawai'i island put in 21-22 hour efforts and AH6KO made 1800 Qs, low power, CW.

I believe there were 3 of us on from VT - W1SJ, K2LE/1, and myself.  For about 3,000 Qs combined.  I was only on for a few hours with 300 Qs, mostly CW but about 50 on SSB.  Just playing around.  Contest looked like fun.  Just too busy this time of year.

I heard at least 1 VT station but was never on when the short skip from 3 land to 1 land was strong enough to work 'em. Heard NE in the pileups, never found one running and the PSE UP trick didn't work to lure the S&Per to move up a few Khz and work me.

OK was a hard one this year - K5CM usually booms in but was at ESP levels this year. Same with GA and K4BAI. By contrast AK was easy!

The 10-meter contest was great this year. Worked 49 states, only missed SC, and 54 countries. Low power CW only.

This one made me giggle  ;D

Didn't get to do the ARRL 10 meter test this year. With conditions as good as or better then the 2022 edition, it's definitely one of my favorite contests. Hopefully next year. The last time I participated in this contest I was Side Band only. Now I can do both modes which means twice the fun  ;)

Conditions were far better in the CQ SSB contest.
