Title: BE VIGILANT: emails that bypass the eHam Classifieds contact scheme
Post by: N2MG on February 03, 2023, 11:40:47 AM
Please note that on eHam, the initial contact with someone posting in the Classifieds is supposed to be through our system.  It would be obvious to the recipient of such an email that it had come from eHam.

Anyone emailing you directly - in other words NOT using the eHam system - has deliberately bypassed this admittedly minimal security.  They've harvested your email address from some other source outside the Classifieds. Maybe you posted here on the site or elsewhere and the email address was visible. Maybe they guessed it.

BE AWARE!

Update 1:  As others and I have experienced, placing a "Want to buy" ad is asking for trouble.  You will, with almost 100% certainty, be contacted by a scammer. See the above.

Update 2: Do NOT use the zero-commission "Friends" option via Paypal - you get no protection. (Unless of course it's truly a Friend!)

Update 3: Ask for a picture of the item with their QSL card.  (I had a fake seller scribble a fake callsign on an index card. WTH?)
