Title: Generator Noise
Post by: VA6YB on February 22, 2023, 02:05:42 PM
We have a fish camp in a (very) remote area, we power the camp with a 12KW diesel generator. Generator is 200 feet away from the cabin. When we're up in the spring, I'm going to try a bit of radio communication. Pre-emptively, what would folks here recommend as a line noise suppressor/ filter that I can bring along? Off the shelf would be nice but I know my way around a soldering iron. Thanks in advance. 73 VA6YB

a REALLY good muffler!

12kw will likely be mechanical injection.  I doubt you will hear any RF/EMI noise from the genny.

You're not wrong about the muffler, that's for darned sure. Plan is to bring Plan B (LiFe battery) along anyway.

Is the generator a sine wave unit?  Any portable radio will test it.

If you use a 120V to DC power supply the likelihood of any line interference getting through via coupling is small.  That's about as far as I'd go for a casual operation.
