I've seen it in some of the local automotive parts stores. It's call black crackle or black wrinkle (not Grackle).

That would be really cool if you could get black paint like Grackles!

A nice iridescent sheen and all :-D

Have LOTS of ventilation when you use Crackle paint!  Really nasty solvents in them.

As noted there several places to find crinkle/wrinkle/crackle paint.

In case you've never used it before, let me suggest:  Use a good automotive self etching primer and let dry 24 hours before the crinkle paint application.  Use two coats of crinkle paint, about 10minutes apart.  Finally, dry with elevated heat.  Like an oven (NOT your wife's), heat lamps in a large box, etc.  (Lamp light dispersed to prevent "spotting."

The use of this specialty paint takes a bit of planning for an even finish.

Are you re-doing or touching up an old piece or starting over?  I have done some remedial work on some WW2 gear and sometimes you can "fake over" damaged areas.  If you are going for a "strip and redo" , the previous posters are correct, it is a complicated task.  Good luck.

You can also get that effect with plain old spray paint. It happened to me when I was painting the backside of an LCD bezel black. I was using something common (Rustoleum?), and the 2nd coat immediately wrinkled seconds after it was sprayed on. I wasn't planning on it but it looked kind of neat so I kept it.

It happens when you do a second spray coat when the top of the first layer has dried, but is not dry throughout. Most spray paint will list two times for a second coat: the overcoat must be before the first time or after the second time. The first time is typically something like 30-60 minutes, the second 1-2 days. If you overcoat in the middle it may wrinkle.

Thanks much for all the inputs. Generosity is much appreciated... I guess it was termed grackle at some point in time but that could have been a local colloquial or product name for all I know. I always thought that "grackle" paint was differentiated from "crackle" and useful at higher temperatures specifically for heatsinking.
