Here,  the small 240 vac variac is installed..... complete with a right angle drive, that goes through the rear panel.
Small Variac is used for filament voltage adjustment. Pretty slick, unique arrangement.

This only works when everything is constant? Vac that is, sorry for the contradiction in terms, but I am sure that you get my drift
