On occasion I use my Pickering CW keyboard from 1965--the first factory-made keyboard designed for amateur radio use.

As an Advanced licensee in 1972, I read through the ARRL License Manual's Amateur Extra section twice over a long (three-day) weekend and passed the written and 20 wpm CW exams on Tuesday at the NYC FCC office.

You can do what I do and it really works. I place a 25 pound bag of feeder nuts and corn at the bottom of my 2 support trees. The varmints eat that instead of my ropes. They don’t even climb the trees at all. They eat the food. You have to be smarter than those little rascals. You can buy the feed at any feed store or hardware store.

And pretty soon you have more varmints than you can afford to feed.

I have a yards full of tortoises who keep the grass and weeds mowed down so much that I have to feed them store bought produce. The trick is to keep the ground squirrels away until the tortoises are done eating. Not only that but the squirrels have developed a taste for my oranges too.

Can’t shoot them. My town has and ordnance against firearms and pellet guns, and besides I live right behind a school and I don’t want a visit from the swat team. I can trap them, but then I need a “humane” way to bump them off - we’re apparently not supposed to release them outside town to feed the coyotes.

Dang squirrels…

The “all about me” rationalizations are getting longer and more tedious.

I don't understand your argument.

The fortunate fact is, the numbers show that DX Hogs aren't that common in the end.  Look at any Clublog expedition numbers.

The unfortunate fact is, for those that do decide to go for 26 slots, they probably need maybe three slots, tops, for any kind of award purpose whatever.  Guys that have the station to even try to do 26 slots almost certainly already have most if not all the major awards they want.  And have given up on the rest.  They almost certainly have most of the Challenge slots from three or four earlier expeditions.

Accordingly, they are no longer playing the same game as the rest of us and they don't care about us or our rules or "ethics".  They and their few buddies are out for themselves and their definition of it, while piggy by our standards, are the game they want to play.

If this is the profile of these hogs (and I think it is for most of them), what can we say to dissuade them?  They may feel it is the only game left worth playing.  I don't see how we have any leverage to talk 'em out of it.

Like a lot of other crap in ham radio, like jammers, we just learn to overcome.

You and I may agree they are selfish, but we should also recognize ours is not the only game in town.

As an American who has visited many of the Countries on the list in the article, including North Korea, Iran, Iraq, Yemen, Myanmar, Eritrea, South Sudan, Vietnam, Egypt and many others, the worst place I have visited is Chicago.

Thanks for the toroid turns chart. First thing I confirmed up front was there’s no metal foil or mesh in roof system as it replaced down to the bare wood deck no thanks to a hurricane. Good question on the grounding of studs. I’ll check that out. Also need to understand the house grounding which may be an Ufer. Any recommendations on an inexpensive portable SW radio I can use in the attic but also as an EMI sniffer around the house? Was thinking of a Tecsun PL330 or similar. Unfortunately, only exterior antenna that would pass the HOA would be limited to within my lanai which is covered by a Faraday cage aka a screen cage.

I recently received my General Class ticket and have been reading The Fast Track Extra Class study guide. Michael Burnette recommends reading through the study guide prior to actually really getting into the material.
I have read a good third of the book and am becoming dumbfounded by the complexity of the course content.
What is the average time one spends on studying the material prior to testing, two months, six months, more ?
 Any helpful advise ?

Thank Y'all,
Brad

Really good comments here.  I want to clarify my situation and highlight a few points:

I have a 2016 Honda Fit.  Two cig outlets(sockets.)  One in dash and one in center cubicle between seats.  They are individually factory fused with 20a sub-mini fuses.

Running an SSB rig @ 100w is VERY different than an FM rig @ 50w.  The FM rig is at 100% duty cycle, the SSB rig isn't, ever.  If it was, that poster would have then explained how much damage occurred to wiring, socket & plug.

I originally had an HT (5w) in my car.  I was talking to a ham and sending some APRS msg.  The HT went dead and I reached in to ensure plug was firm in the socket.  It was hot.  So hot is branded my hand!  The plug I had was a very cheap adapter, ill fitting in the socket.  The resistance on that poor connection, even at 5w was enough to literally cause the plug to burn me.  Had a short talk with god about that!

Ditto on the auto wiring.  No matter what you do, work on the side of safety and derate your fuse.  By derating, I mean use a smaller fuse that will blow sooner.  Better safe than sorry.  Keep a good stock of fuses in the glove box.

The Honda I own uses a battery one would think was made for a motorcycle.  Wiring direct is out of the question.  All my other vehicles I owned, I did run direct to battery, then a fuse > through a DC noise filter > radio.

What I need is an auxiliary battery, charged by a 5amp limited plug.  If I could, I would have a smart limiter, it would detect when I turned car off, and open the connection to the radio, but I'm dreaming out loud!

A second option, have the folks at our auto-electric shop modify the socket in the console cubical to add powerpole outlet for me, but I fear the price tag.

Tnx for the good feed back.

I renewed without problems.  Used the FRN on my license.  Paid my $35.  Was confirmed next day.  Extended from date of expiration so no penalty for renewing a bit early (up to 90 days).
