There is currently an ad on another site for 5 different narrow filters for the Yaesu FT1000 series.  Here is what's at the bottom of the ad

"Unfortunately, due to parts swappers these are sold as is with no returns"

THESE ARE FILTERS!!!  How am I going to parts swap a filter? Pull the thing apart and swap out some crytals??

No - what the shysters do is to take your working filter and swap it with their bad one, then demand a return because "...ordered it for the wrong radio..." or something along those lines.

It's not limited to just filters, either.

I honestly wouldn't put it past some people.

Even a filter can be misused and damaged leading to a DOA claim and a automatic refund. Here is the larger problem;

Some buyers buy anything they can, they do not even care what it is, especially if shipping is free. They claim it is broken or not as described and automatically get a refund from eBay.

Now you have to get it returned from them, it can take time, many sellers give up and let them keep it in exchange for not getting negative feedback.

If they agree to return it to you they expect you to pay postage, after all you sent them a broken or incorrect item. They send you a quote from the UPS store or similar for deluxe packaging, insurance, tracking etc and expect payment in advance. Then they send it back to you the cheapest way they can, I'm surprised I haven't seen COD yet.

I've been around this tree 3 times in the past year.

You sell them a filter and ship it.

They take the damaged filter and send it back to you, keeping the working one. If they're crafty enough, the stickers atop them (which have serial numbers) can be removed and swapped.

One of the oldest scams in the book, but by no means limited to filters.

??

They're selling filters not trading filters.

??

Back to the paddle.

I heard about that, and still shake my head in disbelief. Very sad!

By no means...

Years ago, I had some IBM SVGA monitors for sale at a hamfest.  Guy came and bought 2, brought them back a half hour later & claimed that they didn't work; complained loudly so I just gave him his money back to shut him up.  Looked at the monitors he brought back later, and realized that he'd switched them on me.  (There were tags on the back that hadn't been on the ones I'd sold).

After that incident, I always tried to get power at my table (when I was selling items like these), even if it was outdoors, so that I could demonstrate the items working properly before they buyer walked away.  In the long run, saved a lot of hassles.

Now I see it.

Oh boy.

Like George Washington said, 'There is no profit in honesty'.
Or maybe Nero said that.

Have fun folks.

Might even have been earlier.....

Between honest people, there can be, though. Occasionally, one's faith in human nature can be restored.
