Thanks for this thread! I started repairing radios in 1947. My favorite library book was "Radio For The Millions". (I think I paid for it in overdue fines. Hi.)
I got goose bumps reading all the q's and a's involved here as I once owned an HQ100 too. Great piece of equipment an I could certainly relate!!
As to your K3 call, I figured you got into hamming before me (K3UIM) because of the STX being "older". (Not the case, I guess.)

Yeah, I wish they did not allow vanity calls. Back-in-the-day you knew something about the status of the person you were working by their callsign. Not anymore.
 
(and I realize I am a hypocrite, I got a vanity call since I will play by the rules dealt to me).
