Title: Which DX-peditions Will You Be Chasing in 2015/16 for an ATNO?
Post by: KY6R on February 24, 2015, 04:24:41 AM
There sure were lots of great DX-peditions in 2014, and some already in 2015. Which entities / DX-peditions in 2015/16 will you be chasing for an ATNO?

For me it was K1N and the next up are:

VK0EK
3Y0F

Early 2016:

VP8/S
3Y/ON4WW

The others that have been rumored - but not yet announced - are one's I don't need. In fact, if all goes well, after these I would only need Glorioso and Kingman Reef. Exciting times ahead!

Is there a chronological chart listing confirmed/proposed/wishful dxpeditions all the way into 2016? I can't seem to find anything.

I know what you mean. I like the dx-world chart, but I can only seem to get a monthly view. I wonder what it would take to create something like the calendars that we get on the contest site, http://www.hornucopia.com/contestcal/index.html.

How about that, almost exactly the same list for me except Kerguelen instead of Chesterfield, as I worked TX0DX back in 2000.

Edit: And Spratly, too!

Since my DXCC odometer is just about to roll over 300 I decided to make a list of all my remaining entities needed and - surprise -  the ones I needed plus the ones I have credit for (and a couple of in-betweens) only came out to 339 ???
After an hour or so of comparing lists between the logging program, LoTW, and the Excel sheet I use I had the (pleasure?) of finding one (5H3EE) that I worked and confirmed 5 years ago but somehow didn't get it in for card checking!  Instant ATNO, sort of, and one less needed from Awful Africa which is straight over the pole from here and all the way through Europe.  With the further addition of ST100S on Saturday night that leaves just 10 needed from the Dark Continent.  Almost everything else is islands/reefs/rocks.  Bring 'em on!

The DX World Weekly Bulletin has a list of announced and "contemplated" operations.
Current issue is here (http://www.dx-world.net/bulletins/DX_83.pdf)

Hi John,

I didn't include Kerguelen since there's very little info on it.  Hopefully more will be announced later.  I was hoping the VK0EK team will stop by Kerguelen however that hasn't been confirmed yet.

My "to do" list for 2015/16:
3Y0F
E3
VK0EK
VP8/S
VP8/G
DX0P (Spratly)

If I check off these, I'll be within 5 of HR .... still a long way, but, when I look back to when I got started in "The Chase", I never thought I'd be at this level.

Palmyra and Jarvis - is that confirmed?

That should bring me nicely up to 319. If we get Palmyra/Jarvis, that will be 320.

Not too bad considering I really only got in the chase in 2006.

An ATNO is an ATNO, and the less competition the better!  I was happy to see this 9Q operation changed from "very short" to a full two weeks on the air.  March has traditionally been 'Africa Month' for me so I'm hoping it will be relatively easy to put it in the log.  Onwards and upwards!

I'm at 332 total w /c but only 329 current
so the only ATNO's coming up for me are:

Heard

S. Sandwich

If I bag any two of these I'll finally make it to HR.

It is fascinating to see everybody's needs. As I look at the list, many are top 10, but you have all those. And then one pops up like XV or Jonathan's 9Q. I'd give anything to find A92GE before the EUs find him. Although I've had my chances and so far no luck.
Zone 26 kicks our butt here in the southeast. By the time you consider distance, the pole, the local QRN, the attention they get when spotted - you have to have a really good antenna, some power (or both). I was hoping this cycle would be a big help, but it really wasn't strong enough overall for what I'm doing. So baring any right time, right place, right condx luck, it looks like its back to searching 20M long path in the morning for me.

Hi Larry,

I have made 3 QSOs with A9 in the last year from Oak Ridge, all barefoot with a 40 meter dipole:

07/10/14   12:26   A92GE   CW   12m
25/07/14   23:44   A92HK   SSB   20m
25/07/14   23:36   A92HK   SSB   17m

Signals were good in all cases, so there's hope.  Good luck.

Thanks Rich.  I think the biggest challenge for Alex is finding qualified operators who are both skilled and financially fit.  Each operator IS a major sponsor.  With Navassa just ended, and Chesterfield, Heard, VP8 double header, Kerguelen, and Palmyra all in the span of just four months, there will be a shortage of qualified operators.  I really want to see the project succeed.  Hopefully Alex can pull it off.  If there's anything I could do to help please let me know.

Hey Mike,
Well, I don't have a mic and I would have to build the SSB module for the K2 - which I do have. So that leaves A92GE. There were 1 or 2 other active A9 CW ops a few years ago, but I think they went back to the UK. I've worked about every country around there (except, of course, EP) on multiple bands, but A9 has been the thorn in my side. I see A92GE spotted on the high bands, mainly before I have propagation. But that 12M QSO at 1230Z should have been a good time - I just wasn't there.

Hey Rich,

I see you are being listed as the pilot for 3Y0F.  Do you know if the NCDXF will fund this dxpedition?  If it does then that's a sign the dxpedition will likely happen :)

73,
Jonathan W6GX

What I know:

+ Alex is very actively working on his project and funding - all channels
+ He tentatively has moved the dates so 3Y0F would happen right after VK0EK, meaning December 22 - January 15
+ He has a license

Thanks Rich.  I think the biggest challenge for Alex is finding qualified operators who are both skilled and financially fit.  Each operator IS a major sponsor.  With Navassa just ended, and Chesterfield, Heard, VP8 double header, Kerguelen, and Palmyra all in the span of just four months, there will be a shortage of qualified operators.  I really want to see the project succeed.  Hopefully Alex can pull it off.  If there's anything I could do to help please let me know.

73,
Jonathan W6GX

I agree, and have a couple of comments. First - the person who goes and activates any entity is qualified and a hero in my book. Several of the VK0IR operators were inexperienced - and for a few it was their first DX-pedition. They made 80K QSO's at the absolute bottom of the cycle. I need to re-read the VK0IR book (free on the VK0EK.ORG site for anyone who wants a great read) again. Its the classic story of a team that had to overcome some hardships and who went on - all of the operators - to become world famous in the DX Community.

And several are leading some of the most successful DX-peditions today. You have to start somewhere, eh? VK0IR was a durn good place to start!

Agreed.  It would make sense for Alex to bring a few adventurers who may not have a ton of experience in dxpeditions.  Yes, I applaud anyone who takes on a challenging dxpedition such as Bouvet.  On the other hand major sponsors look for a seasoned team as their donation criteria.  So it must be tough trying to convince your sponsor that your dxpedition will go well despite having inexperienced operators.  I wish the financial model for dxpeditions could be different however the current system only rewards proven and experienced teams.  Sorry for all of the negativity.  I'm trying to bring the challenges of mounting a dxpedition to light.  With that said I will support the dxpedition once they have NCDXF on board as a major sponsor.

Looking ahead with 315 current, I'll be chasing the following for ATNO's: Eritrea, Trindade Island, South Sandwich and South Georgia Islands, Chesterfield Island, Heard Island, Bouvet Island, Palmyra Island, and Kerguelen Island. That will be lot of island chasing by someone who lives on a barrier island in northwest Florida near the Gulf of Mexico.

We'll see if other opportunities come up, but I'm planning on Cambodia and/or Nepal next year with a focus on NA. I definitely hope to put Cambodia on the air with a multi-op team in the next few years. But another yet-to-be-announced operation that will make lots of folks happy is in the works for this year. No, not P5, but a top 50 entity that hasn't been on in several years. Details... soon. If the permits or boat don't come through, maybe I'll do Cambodia this fall.

I don't think either entity (Nepal or Cambodia) are exceedingly rare - I worked them a bunch of times when I was living in KH2 and XU specifically was almost somewhat common in contests.  The issue comes with RX due to local QRN, and a power limit of 100W and 400W respectively (not certain).  This, coupled with DXpedition standard antennas, makes long haul DX all that much harder.  In another words, they are active, but NA can rarely hear them.  That would be one of the challenges to executing a NA-focus DXpedition from there.

I don't think either entity (Nepal or Cambodia) are exceedingly rare.

Correct, but on the Club Log list for NA, Nepal is #41 (more demanded than Aves Island or Palestine, for example) and Cambodia is #58. While both have some activity (at most a few hours of activity per week), neither are on a lot or at times or with propagation that focuses on NA. I think both would be fun and relatively easy entities to put on the air - Cambodia is one of my favorite places on the planet to visit. But you're correct that both would pose some distinct challenges to North America.

You could do a lot of sightseeing while waiting for quiet geomagnetic conditions that allows for propagation over the poles.

What would make me exceedingly happy, other than a surprise ATNO like Pratas or San Felix, would be a dedicated 80/160m activation of the rare Asian zones for North America. Sure it's easy to work Zones 23, 24, 26 and 28 from 10 through 40m, but on 80 and 160?

Hi Larry,

I have made 3 QSOs with A9 in the last year from Oak Ridge, all barefoot with a 40 meter dipole:

07/10/14   12:26   A92GE   CW   12m
25/07/14   23:44   A92HK   SSB   20m
25/07/14   23:36   A92HK   SSB   17m

Signals were good in all cases, so there's hope.  Good luck.

73,
Mike

Hey Mike,
Well, I don't have a mic and I would have to build the SSB module for the K2 - which I do have.

I believe you're chasing all-QRP nowadays. I got the ARRL's QRP-DXCC while I had an FT-817 (about 2002-2007) and was amazed how good 30m was for that activity. That award relies on an honor system so it's simple to qualify. For DXCC do all your cards have to show NU4B/QRP to count ? (For N5UD, do yours all have to show the /M to count ?)

I very rarely signed with /QRP, figured it just added extra time to the Q. For a couple of mine tho', I wish I had done that as hard proof !!!

For ARRL QRP DXCC, you don't need to present cards. Just a log extract.

I also worked QRP DXCC using an FT-817, and it was actually fun! By that stage, I had figured out what was worth calling, and what was not worth bothering with.

For ATNO on the ADXO calendar, I have:

Trindade - slight chance
Heard I - should be easy
Bouvet - slight chance
S Georgia, Sandwich - again slight chance due to difficult path and time of year.

With two ATNO in the bag already this year, one more would make it a good year!

With ARRL call/M counts same as call. CQ keeps a separate award for mobile.
Yes mobile needs an indication on the QSL.

ATNO ? I need a P5 QSL ARRL will count.

Mobile ? Still need about 30 of them. I didn't notice what was on the list here.
I did notice some I don't need mobile.

Rich
KY6R

Jeesh, probably be easier to list what I don't need from upcoming DXpeditions for an ATNO - since becoming active again (18 months ago) I've snagged only 224 DXCC - so just about every big DXpedition is one I need. One at a time!

You are located in Oregon, possibly the best location to work P5 from N.A.  However you do need to upgrade your station, perhaps by adding a legal limit amplifier.  But somehow I got the feeling that you will work them barefoot from Oregon :)

To my total amazement this morning our time, after seeing a 17 m spot for Denis VP8DOZ in South Georgia Island, I started to actually hear him after about 15 minutes listening!

Then, in between a couple of JAs who were calling without seeming to hear his reply, I called and made the QSO! This is my most difficult path, over the South Pole, and over the range to my south.

This was one I wasn't actively chasing, not expecting anything at all. So now, the Intrepid VP8S/G next year is looking promising.

Heard Island should be easy from here, and Trindade will be on air in a few days and will be a long shot, but I'll be listening!

You're one lucky dog Luke!  Perhaps I have a shot at it too if I get a 17m monobander.  17m is my worse band :D  But first I have to start chasing him!

Although I already worked him a few weeks ago I still tune to his frequency when my alarm goes off. He was louder yesterday than when I worked him on 04 March. 100% copy, about 5x5 on peaks.

Denis is on right now.  My ESP hearing is not working very well today >:(

Well, this year has started well, with all ATNO opportunities realised.

Navassa I, much harder to work than expected, and some bands missed, but confirmed on 5 bands three modes.
Cocos I, wasn't expecting to work this one but worked them 3 bands and two modes.
South Georgia I, never expected to even hear Denis, but worked him on 17 m.
Trindade I, never expected any joy here, but was in the right place at the right time!

Now it looks like an 8-month drought of ATNO, unless something unexpected happens, until the Heard I expedition is QRV. Then Bouvet, South Sandwich, and North Korea?

I'm "only" 15 off HR - now it is starting to look possible!

The XYL wants to take a winter vacation this year.  I can't fathom the idea of missing any one of these however I think I'll lose the battle with her.  It's cheaper to go to one of these places than a divorce :D

Tell her you can take her to the rare and exotic Bouvet Island for a Skiing vacation.  She can do some Skiing while you work the Dx  ;D  First dibs on a Scheduled contact with you.  ;D

With all this trading.....reminds of "my kingdom for a horse"

None of those are a real ATNO for me. Some are ATNO for the mobile station !

If only it really worked that way! I'm still betting on Kingman being my last-one for #1HR, and if not Kingman then either P5, San Felix or Crozet. And I'd bet money on Crozet coming up in 2 or 3 years.

Most of those mentioned I have worked/confirmed at least once.

I need:
BS7 - Scarborough Reef
BV9 - Pratas Is.
P5 - North Korea
VP8-S - South Sandwich Is
for ATNO's

That is... if I get my E30FB confirmation.

Rick-N8XI, you have six contacts in the E30FB log, why would you not get a confirmation?

OQRS is open and Tim-M0URX is one of the best QSL Managers.

What else do you need?

Hi Paul,

Since I already have E30FB confirmed from the first activation I only requested my QSLs for the second activation to come through via the Buro.  Unlike Clublog Tim's software doesn't have a provision for a donation via the Buro option.  I'd rather not have the team waste postage for a direct card when I don't need it via direct.  I cannot find a donation link on the E30FB website.  What's the best option for a donation outside of the QSL process?  Lastly, your team should have received a donation from the Mile High DX Club.  If would be nice if our club logo could be put on the QSL card (not a requirement but a nice-to-have).  Thanks again for activating E30.

Paul,

Not too worry. I  was trying to be my 'lib' self as usual :(
I tried OQRS and my bank notified me that my card had been compromised (Hacked!).
Glad they caught it!!
Tim and I passed emails back and forth and I sent my postal request with several USDs.

Take care
