Title: Old time Crystal radio
Post by: VE3TRU on January 08, 2016, 05:43:52 AM
I'm trying to build a crystal radio, for some thing fun to do.
Had an idea of combining two sets, tuned to the same frequency, to give me a greater output.
Not sure if its worth the trouble, or even possible. Also maybe there is a trick to doing this that I don't know about. A dual tuning capacitor might work, I have my doubts you could get them to sync that way.
.
Once you power it up with a transistor, its not a crystal radio anymore, its a transistor one. You cant put that ketchup on a steak.

Use high-Z crystal headphones and it should be loud enough.

Yep!  Mine works fine with a crystal ear plug!  If you really want to have some fun, just attach your crystal radio to the input of your stereo system!!  :)

A couple of other spots:  www.crystalradio.net and www.midnightscience.net.    Crystal sets are a great way to teach young people how a basic radio works.  Been building them for 65 years.

I get pretty good volume and hear LOTS of stations using my 160M dipole for an antenna. On a typical winter night I can often hear 20 or more AM standard broadcast stations. Using a 1N34 diode for the "crystal" I can tune in shortwave stations all the way up to around 3 MHz.
