Title: 3D2/C - Conway Reef - Activity 2018?
Post by: VE3VEE on April 25, 2018, 06:24:01 AM
3D2CR QRZ.com page has been set up by Dom 3Z9DX https://www.qrz.com/db/3D2CR

At the moment, the only info the page contains is the following: "Activity 2018".

It would be a welcome opportunity for an ATNO for me.

Marvin, could you share some information on your station set-up? I live in a seemingly optimal location, right on the oceanside in NS, but I never have any luck working, for instance, Australians, Japanese, or Conway Reefians (I don't seem to have any westward prop).   I don't have a very directional antenna; just a magnetic loop. I see you must have a beam of some sort... is that the only way to hear and work these guys? When I lived in Ontario I remember having a heck of a time even hitting Western Europe.

Hi Joshua,

I envy your VE1 location. Being closer to the ocean helps big time. VE3 is not that great as you know. However, it would now help you to have a larger antenna. The loop or the vertical I saw on your QRZ page are small. Could you have a full size vertical there instead? Or some wire loop or a dipole?

The CONDX is not the best these days so that doesn't help either. Have you tried the new FT8 mode? FT8 versus SSB is like having a 6dB better antenna!  ;D

Hah, no FT8 for me. I am sure it is great, but I get a thrill from a CW contact that I know I wouldn't get from FT8. I am trying to do as much as I can with my paddles.

The loop is small, indeed. But it is about the right size for the bands it's made for; it could be slightly larger if I wanted to optimise efficiency on 40m, though, you're right about that.

The loop is probably about as large of an antenna as I can put up without having some neighbour issues...and there aren't enough trees to get a nice wire loop up, though that's a good suggestion. It's a rented house, not my permanent dwelling for life, so it isn't like I am stuck here forever, but I would love to be able to hear some VKs. Perhaps I need to get up early in the morning, just as the sun rises, and see if anything comes through.

It may be "the right size" as far as magnetic loop antennas go, but magnetic loop antennas are a big compromise. A full size dipole, a full size vertical with radials, or a full size loop antenna, even at a small height would be a noticeable performance improvement for you.

Like telescopes. They all can focus, but size (aperture) matters.  ;D

sun rise your end would be good .
have you tried going portable and getting to a dominant location for a few hours its lots of fun.

I suspect you're really going to have to "up your game", antenna-wise.

I run nothing but wire antennas here and I've worked VKs on every HF band from 160m to 10m (excluding 60m because they don't have access), with a combination of SSB, RTTY, JT65, and FT8. JAs are a little tougher, but I have them on most of the HF bands. Fiji I have on 4 bands (all JT65 and FT8), and Conway Reef I have on 2 bands (all SSB).

If you have two trees a Half Square can be an effective vertically polarized antenna without the hassle of radials. This may allow you to take advantage of your excellent location.  Rudy N6LF has done a study that suggests you can bend the ends of the antenna close to ground if you don't have enough height for a full size version.

It is quite possible to work long haul DX quite different from the calculated short/long paths, so don't discount a pair of trees as supports just because seem to be oriented "wrong" for the DX you wish to work.

This is positive news from DX world.

A “quick” activity from Conway Reef (OC-112) by Dom, 3Z9DX and others is planned for sometime in May. Full details to follow, however there are spaces available on the team.

The Daily DX just reported the following rumor:

3D2 - Conway Reef
Rumor has it the 3D2CR DXpedition by 3Z9DX and his team has been
postponed due to boat engine problems. There is also no update on the
T31 DXpedition.

Again, it's just a rumor. Let's see if we hear from Dom. At this point I tend not to believe it.

There is a dealy from Kiribati gov. with delivery new SAT emergency system for early warning earthquake and tsunami .
We want to do it as 1 trip .
Conway and Kanton .
Thats a reason we din't announced any date or even web page.

Any further news about when/whether this activity will take place?  Exact dates not required but any scuttlebutt on general timeframes would be helpful, if known!
