Title: Best tuner, either the AT2KD or AT2K ???
Post by: KC8Y on September 07, 2018, 03:42:55 PM
I, already use the Palstar AT1KP--10 years.  Looking at acquiring, either AT2KD  or AT2K (either one. for the same price).  They both handle the same amount of power and have same amount of physical & electrical specifications

Would like your views on each model.  (Have, already read views on eham.net )

Specs and functional characteristics are not the same, however close they may be at first glance.

I have an AT2KD which I like a lot because it's very easy and quick to tune with just two controls. It's a differential T tuner with both caps on the same shaft, which has consequences in terms of somewhat limiting tuning range. I wasn't able to tune some antennas which I could tune with my Ameritron ATR 30 which has separately-adjustable caps.

The AT2K has separately-adjustable caps which are likely to give it a somewhat wider tuning range. This model also sports a current balun on the output which is something you have to add to the AT2KD if you are going to use ladder line.

If you look at QST reviews, you may find both tuners described with tuning
results on various bands with various loads. You may find that for your particular situation(s) you may do better with one or the other.

If your tuner requirements are not demanding, you may find that the AT2KD is really easy and convenient to use. You can always experiment with your antenna to make the tuner's job easier in case you can't at first find a good tuning.

Love L and T networks.  More work using them, but I think much more efficient than pi networks.  You’ll have to do your homework on using them as well as having an idea of the types of reactances you’re dealing with, but it’s actually fun and gratifying, I think.

Mileages, as always.

I have used the D version, it is nice, one less knob to twist, and it matched anything I could throw at it.  If I remember I went through the same questions when I got it.  I decided on the D because the specs were close enough that in my RF environment things worked well.

Wider range with AT2K, the ARRL did a review of these two tuners and one of the things they were impressed by was the low loss of the AT2K. If you are a member go look it up.
