Title: TT8KO - Chad
Post by: KM4SII on October 09, 2018, 12:29:25 PM
Ken, LA7GIA just came on the air from Chad a few minutes ago on 15m CW. And I got him!! Working a DXpedition in the first hours for me is unheard of with my little 100w. Thank you Ken, you just made my day  :D

Ken will be active from The Republic of Chad from October 9th - 21st on CW and SSB.

Mason,

CONGRATS!!!

I just got home, turned the radio on, and yes, Ken is on 21.023 now calling for NA West Coast stations.

GL to all who need Chad. I'd love TT8 on Phone, but this will be mostly CW operation so it may not happen this time around.

He does have a decent signal on 21.023 even though I have no antenna for 15m. Ken always manages to generate strong signal from where ever he goes. He doesn't seem to compromise on the location of his antennas even when he has to risk his life for it!  ;D ;D ;D

He had very nice signals into Louisiana on 15M and 20M.  Got him on 15M CW.  Big pileup.  Took a while with 100W and wire.

Congrats Mason!  TT is a very rare country.  Ken likes to visit countries that are not activated often.  That's a really good catch on the first day of operation!

Sorry to hear this.  It seems many dxpedition teams always visit Africa in the northern hemisphere winter so they can work other northern hemisphere countries.  What month of the year is ideal for you to work AF?  Perhaps in the southern hemisphere winter so there's less absorption over the south pole?

It's not so much the month, but the year.

2025 should be better.

Thankfully I have Chad confirmed on a few bands from some years ago, when Nando was there. Chad was the last of the "Terrible T's" for me!

Shortly after 9 am my time (1300z) Ken started on 20m CW. I'm surprised I can hear him well this very early. I wonder how very strong he will be later today in our afternoon/evening.

GL to VK/ZL guys. Hopefully the CONDX will allow for QSOs.

I have heard you say things like this and then you end up working the DX on three bands  ;D

Last night Ken had a good signal on 40m CW.  Now I'm looking for a bandfill on 30m, and if I'm super lucky, one on 80m.

Thanks fer support from everyone! Much of the public services like landline phone, cellphone and internet is down frequently or vy slow. There are frequent power outages. Despite the situation, yes it is really frustrating, my safety is no issue as it is now. The hotel compound is guarded by armed security personell ( as well is my antennas hi). Taking a taxi yesterday to ARCEPs offices, yes during searching with metal detector upon returning to hotel  - the driver was armed with a machete and a gun- to keep us safe. Hotel is very supportive and keeps the spirit up, it is a great location indeed. Manana manana, no one know what future brings. I have some antenna maintenance to do if I get access - as it is now absolutely NO touching. The phone call - it is like waiting for power ball lottery. I have some great stories from the interrogation later. I could not believe what they asked about!

Ken,

I admire your positive attitude. What a disappointment this must be for you after you have invested so much time into this and money, too. We are all very much grateful for your efforts no matter how this story ends. It may very well be possible that you are making it easier for future DXpeditions in the region.

I suspect he's in a hard place.  Can't leave without his expensive equipment, but can't gather it up, nor can he operate.

At least he's in Chad. Could be worse he could be in Washington DC, or California...

Wow.  In a small way this reminds me of a time I was "grounded" at the Arizona Port of Entry for some bullshit issues.  Log violations, some equipment did not pass a trumped up inspection.  To make it worse they barely spoke English.  After an hour or so of fighting the idiot authorities, pushing well past "lockup" territory, another driver told me to quit fighting and just ask, "how much?"

$250 dollars CASH and 5 minutes later I was on my way.  They understood that.  Right here in the good old USA.

Had a similar experience in Jamaica. Flew into Montego Bay and they confiscated all of my gear and told me I needed "more papers". I was very young (19) and naive and didn't get it - drove the rental car (that I was too young to rent) across the country to Kingston - got more "official" papers from the telecom ministry - drove back and was told that I still needed "more papers" ... took me a little while to finally figure it out. Got my gear back in time to go QRV.

A lot of folks don't realize how THIRD world we have become. Of course out of USA travelers know to expect the "extra fee". Back in 2015 my wife and I even had trouble getting into Canada. We decided later it was the TEXAS on our passports that did it. It has now come to the USA.

I sure wish the best real soon for Ken.

I crossed the US/Canadian border about 10 times in the last three months.  Never any bother at all from the Canadians, but the Americans tore my car apart, even going through my dirty clothes bag with gloves on.

I decided later it was the California license plates that did it.   :D

DXpeditions to TWSH countries should never be planned if President or whoever is not a radio-amateur himself.
Considerations on Canada / US border are not relevant to a case in Africa.

My most recent contact with TT was in 2015. It may well be on its way to "very rare" status as it will likely be a long time before another DXpedition attempts to activate Chad given what's going on with Ken.

Now, let's paint it differently (maybe in another dimension)
"...Mr President, radio-amateur himself when times allow, attending a conference at named hotel, is going to pay a visit to Ken's shack TT8KO, and QSO (QRS) for 15mn, propagation allowing, signing a handful of QSL, wishing all good to the DXpedition and next ones..."
"...The country, having such a surge in new ham applications, thanks to Mr President's enthusiasm, considers zeroing import duties for all and any radio-amateur investment..."

The World loses a (rare) DX but gains a few thousands hams, that would be great!

Hello Ken,

I read your trip report and found the details of your experience in Chad very interesting.  I feel fortunate to be in the log and it was an ATNO for me - many thanks!  It seems there is not much chance of any more authorized operations any time soon - we shall see how the Italian team does.

Since you have shown considerable expertise in traveling to what many of us consider unstable, dangerous places - and negotiating the unwritten licensing processes - I would like to suggest for your next expedition a place similar in these features to Chad:

Starting next week, my new project will be a NY based project where Equinor - a world leading Norwegian energy company will construct an offshore windfarm which will power 1 million NY homes with renewable energy (Empire wind project). I will be the Electrical discipline lead of that project. I will be based in Oslo, but if time permits I might have time to visit some NY hams. I assume the only chance for me to operate at 4U1UN would be if someone at the club invites me :)

I have some DX plans. There is one interesting place where I actually received a permit to travel and operate this week - but I could not go due to work obligations - I can tell you it was a pain to not be able to travel. I know many of you need that entity in some way. Maybe some other time.

Who I met at the airport? Of course it was the security police. My bags were beeing screened as I entered the airport. Same time, I noticed a familiar guy entering the airport. While I continued to check in my luggage, he was in the departure hall. As soon as I took the escalator to the 1st floor to go through the border police control, he was there watching me with some of his colleagues. My heart rate must have been in zone 3...

Jonathan,

Yes, I'm too close.

In October 2015, when 4U70UN was briefly QRV on CW, I interrupted my operating in CQ WW DX SSB for an hour to attempt to work them, but I had no luck.  ;D

Now in 2018, a few months back, when Adrian (KO8SCA) was on 20m SSB as 4U1UN, I did hear him well (about s-one  ;D), but I had no chance in the pileup.

I'm sure I will work them sooner or later. It's just a matter of time.  ;D

P.S. I think what is needed for me to work them is for a 4U1UN operator to start calling "CQ East Coast".  ;D ;D ;D

Marvin,

Maybe you can get a HT and work them on 2m  ;D I know W2IRT has a 2m contact with them.

This would be one easy entity for me to get a full sweep 10m-160m but so far luck hasn’t been on my side.  Hopefully this will change in the near future.

GL on your chase.
