Title: DX with mini-dipole on balcony
Post by: K4NNK on March 13, 2019, 08:36:11 AM
I used a HamStick mini-dipole for 20M mounted on my camera's tripod to contact RK3ER, Alex, in Orel, Russia with 50 watts from my condo balcony in Miami.  The antenna can be taken down and stored in less than 60 seconds.

Negative: a relatively inefficient antenna.

Positives: height above ground; proximity to the vast Atlantic RF mirror; dipole vs monopole with
inadequate counterpoise.

Neither here nor there: whatever you can do with 100 or 200 watts, you can
do just about as well with 25 or 50 watts.

Congratulations. When given lemons, make lemonade, as they say....

When given lemons, make lemonade, as they say....

That is the ham spirit!

I regularly make contacts with hams using inefficient antennas. Some of the have dependably strong signals.
Their small antennas' performance is greatly enhanced by height and proximity to the sea.
