Title: Need HW-100 flexible spline
Post by: W3RU on May 07, 2019, 09:55:28 AM
I am restoring a gorgeous HW-100 which still had 95% of it's resistors still in spec!  Only problem is the flexible spline in the unique dial drive "mechanism" for the VFO is broken off the keyed shaft hole which was cast with the original part, and it is split up the side, rendering this part useless with respect to being able to rotate the VFO capacitor.

It is TOTALLY different than the Jackson drive scheme used in the HW-101.  I am looking for that part, possibly from another member who may have a beater HW-100 parts radio.  Long shot, I know, but I figure it is worth the inquiry.

I am also all-ears with respect to anyone who has a method for repairing this part, or with another work-around.  I've already determined I can't substitute the HW-101 Jackson Drive method due to the differences in panel construction.

Thanks

I have seen a hack in the past (which I can't see now) of using a Jackson Brothers drive, requiring modifications to the front panel. and another taking the drive mechanism off a Siltronix/Swan VFO or radio, again requiring some butchery. the last knob I saw on fleaBay was $30 and a few months back. another reason a self-contained epicyclic plastic drive was an idea that didn't last that long at Heathkit.

Have you considered a simple servo drive? The hacker community has reduced this to off the shelf systems for less than $40. You would need to consider the supply requirements.

Don't know what it is worth to you, but I have a bunch of Heathkit "barn find" rigs for less than $85 each.  If you can't find another, I do have a nice looking HW-100, here in the SF Bay Area.  Pickup preferred.

So, if not local, that would have to be plus packaging, postage and insurance.

While I cannot help you on the spline, I do have all the service bulletins, mods etc for the HW-100, HW-101 and the SB-100 series I am happy to email to anyone who wants them. 73, Steve K4JPN

Without seeing the part , I would suggest that you take a look at flex couplings used on CNC stepper motors , You can get them in wide range of shaft sizes 4mm - 14mm  , some are  like a mini U joint ($5 on ebay) . https://www.ebay.com/itm/Shaft-Coupler-Flexible-Plum-Coupling-CNC-Stepper-Motor-Jaw-Spider-for-3D-Printer/192507781281?var=492590965068&_trkparms=aid%3D222007%26algo%3DSIM.MBE%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D20131003132420%26meid%3D171b5cf6e3fa4832930b5e299ef65ba0%26pid%3D100005%26rk%3D1%26rkt%3D12%26sd%3D143013589032%26itm%3D492590965068&_trksid=p2047675.c100005.m1851 (https://www.ebay.com/itm/Shaft-Coupler-Flexible-Plum-Coupling-CNC-Stepper-Motor-Jaw-Spider-for-3D-Printer/192507781281?var=492590965068&_trkparms=aid%3D222007%26algo%3DSIM.MBE%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D20131003132420%26meid%3D171b5cf6e3fa4832930b5e299ef65ba0%26pid%3D100005%26rk%3D1%26rkt%3D12%26sd%3D143013589032%26itm%3D492590965068&_trksid=p2047675.c100005.m1851)
