Dayton is one of the best ham-fest to go to have been to about 4 of them, and I also plan on going in 2004.
Plan early get your hotel room now and airline and car rental. I would do it now..
also plan on doing a lot of walking in the flea market area. It takes about 2 days to look at everything

Dayton is really nice. Spring of 2002 when i first went in the gate at 8:00am friday morning i saw a big ole nice looking tent. I did not pay any attention to what it said over the door but i stepped in and i was in "chickband land". Yes dayton is really fantastic but even there the cbers are showing up. Most go up to see what kind of a deal they can get on used ham gear that they can convert to cb use. So dont fuss so much about shelby...chickenbanders are everywhere now.Soon as the code is dropped they'll be working out our ears.

BOOKMARK THIS THREAD! Because by 01 June 2004, every post will be a bitchfest about:
poor toilet facilities
smelly FELLOW hams
cb radio junk
computer junk
expensive food
over priced junk
poor attendance on Sunday
rain on Friday and early Saturday
over booked motels
over priced motels

I know I am leaving some bitching points out.

I've been attending nearly every year since 1988. I love the Hamvention! If you can't find what you want there, you're not looking hard enough or asking enough dealers questions. It's a great place to find pieces/parts tubes, caps, knobs etc.... Not to mention all the ham radio ops attending and all the bull sessions you get involved in. I dig through the piles of left over junk on Sunday get tons of good stuff for free! Knobs, tubes, project boxes, and many, many other goodies. I get some strange looks...but that's quite okay, cause I get plenty of free goodies!

You can find terrific prices on late model used gear because guys are trying to raise money for the "latest greatest" Rice Boxes making thier debut at the show.

As for the facilities, they do leave a little bit to be desired, but that's just the way it is trying to accomodate 40,000 people. I prefer the port-a-pots along the back row of the flea market area:the lines are very short. It's okay to be grubby at Daton; there ain't many baby dolls running around the show to worry about.

You can also learn a lot and teach a lot out in the flea market area during the afore mentioned Bull sessions, a see people that you only see once per year.

The bus service that runs you to and from your parking areas are great! Drivers will even let you load large stuff in the back ends of their buses.

73 and see you there, Mark-K8ZW, Chillicothe OH

I agree that after it is over every one will be complaining about it.  Even saying that every ham should go at least once in their lives.  You will never find more hams and more ham related equipment there than anywhere else in the US at one time. Bring rain gear. It always seems to rain and good walking shoes. You can spend a full day in the flea market itself. Don't really expect to find many good deals. If you are new at the hobby expect to look at a lot of stuff you have no idea what it is. If you have been in it awhile you will swear you seen the same stuff 30 years ago at a hamfest. Like I said go. It is the biggest one there is. I am trying to go ever other year. Little to expensive for me every year.

Hello,

Last year was my first trip to Dayton. I'm Going back this year. If the agreement with hara arena falls thru for '05 may I make a sugestion? The IX center is in Cleveland, OH is big enough to put the whole show (including flea market) inside! no more rain! What do you think.

Already made reservations on the bus trip from Cleveland. You bet I'm going. It's like every ad you've ever seen in the back of QST come to life before your very eyes.

As for the IX center in Cleveland as a possible alternate location, that's a good idea, for as long as the IX center continues to exist. There is talk of tearing it down for airport runway expansion in the future. But it is HUGE! Used to be the old Cadillac Tank Plant back in the 50s. You could put all of Hara Arena inside the IX center, and most (if not all) of the flea market too probably. They do RV shows, boat shows, and at least 2 different car shows there now. Tons of paved parking, right off a freeway, and adjacent to Hopkins International Airport, too.

See you all at Hamvention!

How about a "Western Version" of the Hamvention - perhaps at the Las Vegas Convention Center or one of the off the strip hotels ? Its been talked about in the past and should be raised as a topic here at Eham.

Why not have it just before or just after NAB which is held every April in Las Vegas.  Broadcasters from around the world, many of whom are hams show up for that convention which is the grand daddy of broadcast gatherings.  Overall attendance would be higher.  The easterners can fly for a change, we'll drive!

I haven't missed a year since 1999.  Every ham needs to go at least once.  No matter what you're interested in... forums, new stuff, old stuff, rubbing shoulders with ham radio personalities like Bob Heil, Joe Walsh and others, it's all there at Dayton.

There are 6 of us who travel to Dayton every year in my van and stay at the University of Dayton in a 6-person dorm room.  It's the best kept secret at Dayton and the best deal on lodging!  We have the dorm for 3 nights at $80 per night.  That breaks down to $40 per person for the entire stay!  Having everyone in the same dorm makes it convenient and tons of fun.  There's tons of pretty good eats within walking distance or a short drive from the dorm and it's about 15 minutes from Hara.  They let you jack your laptop's 10/100 LAN card into their network for Internet access, too.

They are sold out now but keep it in mind for next year.  Reservations open on October 1 each year and the early ham gets the room!  Go to <http://www.udayton.edu/~ku/conference/index.html> for more information.

I'll be helping again at the Amateur Radio Newsline forum on Saturday.  Come by and say hello!

Don Wilbanks, AE5DW.

Yes, I am looking for a room for Thursday & Friday nights.  How much is the room for 2 adults?
