Title: Science Workshop spectrum analyzer
Post by: KG4HLZ on January 07, 2004, 05:16:46 PM
Has anyone had experience with the Science Workshop spectrum analyzer?

http://www.science-workshop.com/

It sounds pretty cool.

Thanks,

Yes, this does sound pretty cool.  There was an article in QEX a while back describing a homemade network analyzer but it used expensive lab grade components (directional couplers, video detectors, etc).  I thought it was very clever of these folks to use tuners as signal sources.  With the prices of used analog scopes these days, this kit puts many hams within the reach of a very useful piece of test equipment.

He has some software listed to interface to a computer through a sound card. If that works then I can think of all kids of cool things to do with it.

My only concern is in getting an accurate signal strength reading. You would have to calibrate for it’s response and any AGC in it.

I wander what kind of tuners are being used in these new scanners with such a huge frequency range.

They've been selling this stuff since the late 70's or early 80's. First highlighted in a Ham Radio Magazine article. Bought my kit at Dayton, in 89 or 90. Had to get to their inside tables early because they always sold out by the middle of the second day. Use it with a Tek 475 scope and it works great.

I see that the Science Workshop web site is still on line, although I haven't received a reply to my inquiry regarding the current availability of their kits.
Does anyone know if they are still in business?

Thanks,
Charles
