Title: 2010 New KENWOOD "Compact HF transceiver"
Post by: 9A6DX on August 22, 2009, 06:55:22 PM
Hello All,

Does anyone have any news(update)about this new radio?
Somehow it looks like the good old TS570. I was hoping to see more
TS950SDX like radio, but it is good to see that KENWOOD is back in business.

It's my understanding that Kenwood told those in attendance at Dayton this year that this new HF rig would replace the TS-570 and that a new higher-end rig would come later.  I also read comments from some folks who went to Huntsville that the design had evolved a bit beyond the TS-570 class.  It would seem, though, that it still isn't a replacement for the TS-2000 (note that this new rig covers 160-6m only).

It will be interesting to see what the final feature set, performance and price point of this new rig will be, especially in light of Icom's announcement of the IC-9100 which appears to be a competitor to the TS-2000/X.

I was told at Dayton by a Kenwood rep that the new radio would be basically a TS-570S (HF/6M) with roofing filters.

At the recent Japan Hair Fair 2009, someone took a picture of a new Kenwood radio. It looked like a TS-570 (flat face) but it was a prototype so no info was available. The pic is on the web here

Can it be possible that Kenwood abandoned the launch of those transceivers? Why is it taking so long? Any clues? News updates? Rumors? Anything. I'll wait for your comments. Thanks.

Kenwood is not keeping up with Icom and Yaesu. Is the rumor true that Kenwood is going to exit the amateur radio market?

Kenwood has been concentrating on VHF/UHF for the past few years, and the word is that they're FINALLY ready to jump back into the HF fray.

They showed a mock-up of a new HF transceiver at the big hamfair in Japan -- as seen in the YouTube video.

The speculation is that they'll either show it again at Dayton as a "look at things to come" (as they did in 1998 with a mock-up of what became the TS-2000) -- or perhaps actually announce that it will be available later this year or early 2011. Whatever the case, it appears that the rig will be a successor --and modest improvement-- on the recently-discontinued TS-570 series. (Great radios for the price, but not "competition grade" rigs.)

The further rumor is that the new rig will be the prelude to a new "high end" radio --perhaps another year or two down the road-- that will be either a "DX/Contesting" successor to the long-discontinued TS-870, or perhaps a new "DC-to-light" successor to the aging TS-2000.

Stay tuned.
