Title: Found My RFI source
Post by: KC0TFS on March 20, 2007, 03:16:25 PM
Most of this winter I had a recuring noise problem.
It covered 160-2 meters a S-9 buzz for 5 to 12 sec folled by 3 to 5 sec of no RFI. I tuned my HT to 500kc AM and used it to track down the source. I checked every thing inside and outside, What ever it was it seemed to be present at every electrical outlet and switch. While downstairs I noticed the aquarium heater lite turn off, the noise stoped, than it came back on the noise returned. Since I unpluged the heater in early Feb. the noise has not returned.
The fish don`t seem to mind.

This is nothing unusual - I've been accused of causing interference even before my antennas were up!  A quick investigation revealed the same thing - an aquarium heater.

Electric blankets, refrigerators...all those things that use bimetallic strips as thermostats have the potential for causing this type of broad-band interference.  Basically, anything that generates an electrical spark generates a corresponding noise.

Glad you figured out the problem.
