Title: 6 meter mobile guys, what antenna do you use?
Post by: W7HBP on September 09, 2012, 07:42:57 PM
Ok, installed a 6 meter in my truck, to compliment my 2m, 70cm, 10m, 12m, 11m (I know 11 meter is CB  :o ) and now my Alinco 6 meter (DR06T) and I have installed the NMO mount type Larsen NMO50C antenna. It appears they want the antenna cropped depending on which part of 47-54Mhz I'm using. Naturally, I'm only using 50-54Mhz, but even then, there is quite a bit that needs trimming (up to about 2/5 inches) . Do you guys just pick the voice section, then trim is and get it in the middle?

I love NMO style mounts, but was disappointed this wont work for the entire band.

you don't need the entire 6m band mobile - with your Alinco FM radio, just the upper part of the band. Tune the antenna centered on the FM Simplex or Repeater frequencies in use in your area.

That is exactly what I did, just the repeater areas, but there is still an inch difference from the bottom to the top of that segment. I have my SWR meter ordered, so I will check it. Just do the best I can, ie a happy medium.  ;)
Thanks for your reply too.

I used a cut down 102" stainless steel whip years ago and it worked beautifully on the entire 6 meter band. I now use a Little Tarheel which also works very well on 6!!

I use two separate setups depending on which mode and band I intend to operate in.  For FM simplex and repeater work (which sounds like you want to do), I use a Larsen NMO50 coil and whip on an NMO mount in the roof of my Tahoe.  If I'm looking for 6m weak signal DX, polarization doesn't matter as much as it does close in, so I replace the Larsen with a Hamstick centered on 50.200Mhz.  If I'm stationary, I also have a 6m Moxon, that I can stick on a short mast on the mount for my HF screwdriver, but it's too big for highway speeds.  I've considered the PAR Omni-Angle, but that's as far as it's gone.

Well, I just happen to be using a Larsen NMO50C also, great idea, get another antenna for the lower end of the band.  ;D I plan on using the repeater section now, will see how my SWR meter readings are and go from there.

Just as a side note, a 2 m 5/8 wave length mobile antenna usually tunes very nicely as a slightly loaded 1/4 wave antenna on 6 m.  When working skywave the polarization is irrelevant other then whatever effect it may have on take-off angle.  Tropo is a different story, you'll need horizontal polarization to work most stations.  A "Squalo" or such for that.

Oh sorry, you were talking FM only.  A vertical is all you need.

The fire dept here used to use 46.46Mhz and the moved to 800MHz so they retired all their lo band VHF gear. I am friends with one of the chiefs so he gave me all their retired gear. The used to use Antenna Specialist antennas with a loading coil on the bottom and about a 3' whip. I found that these are awesome 6M antennas and all you have to do is trim the whip for the portion of 6M that you want to use. I have a few spares if you are interested in one.
